UPDATE: For those following a link directly to this post, you can find pictures of the entire nursery HERE UPDATE: I recently found out the owner of the bed that inspired mine, check out her incredible site HERE When we began planning the nursery I really wanted a spot I could read with our kids and snuggle with them. Since I won’t be working as much, I have great hopes that maybe every once and a while I could cuddle down for a nap with one of them. So in working on the nursery, I began working on a ‘reading bed’ for us. Granted this will be a great bed for naps and for kids, but it is not designed to be an adult bed. I was inspired by this picture and then made it my own. Concoct your own Potions. As a little girl I mixed up shampoos and lotions in my laboratory, trying to improve on the toiletries we had. I never came up with anything worth mentioning, but I did once get scolded for spilling my mom's shampoo all over the bathroom rug. A friend of mine told me about the "laboratory" she'd had at age 12, in which she created, among other things, the cure for AIDs. We made a big score this weekend while on our weekly garage sale hunt – a dresser complete with a mirror, for only $20. I don’t know many folks that actually use the dresser mirrors anymore in a bedroom, but in days yore it must have been a hot commodity since we see them everywhere. We’ve actually had one before but kept it in storage until we sold the whole set – and even the buyers weren’t sure what to do with the mirror, but as it was part of the condition of the sale they reluctantly took it.

As I mentioned back on the post about the wood filled fireplace last month, we contemplated moving the fireplace up as part of the master bedroom makeover. We finally made the move this past weekend and Whitney’s been trying to find some way to decorate the space with items we’ve picked up over the year. I started by taking off the rods on the back of the mirror and prying off the backing. To my surprise, the thing was built much more simply then I thought it would have been.

Wood Pallet Room Divider | My Friend Staci. Update 7/12/11Thank you to everyone who finds this page through google, stumbleupon or pinterest (among others). It is by far the most-visited page on my blog! I never thought this project would be so popular! Please leave a comment below with your thoughts!! Inch by inch, the master bedroom is coming together. We still lack a headboard (looking for the perfect wrought-iron one at the perfect price takes patience) and we are in a rut when it comes to a couple of blank walls, BUT(!)

We have divided up the enormous room into half-bedroom half-workspace by constructing a room divider like so: While in Boston, we saw something like this in a fancy modern furniture store, retailing somewhere between $200-$300. After a bit of finessing and perfecting, we moved them into place where they sat blank for over a month. Now if only the perfect headboard would fall right into my lap… actually, that would probably really hurt… Here is a wider shot of the divider in action. Like this: Like Loading... It was finally a nice warm day today, so the girls and I headed to Ace for materials for today's project. We made it through the store quickly and with no drama! And we came home with this. 2x2, 1x6, 1x4, 4x4 I had seen a really neat tutorial here to make your own candle sticks and I had seen a tutorial here to make candle stick hangers at Drab to Fab. I loved the candle sticks but didn't trust my kiddos not to touch in the house (4x4's are heavy) so I decided to combine the 2 and make something for my front step.

I cut my 4x4 24" long. I stacked the 4 1/2" square on top of the 5 1/2 square and screwed the 2 together from the bottom. I gave it a quick coat of spray primer and then a light coat of heirloom white along the edges. Once the black was dry 15 minutes later I used my sanding sponge to distress the edges. I bought the cheapest hook I could find and sprayed it ORB. 34 DIY headboard ideas. The headboard is now looked at as a mainly decorative element in our bedrooms. As it usually happens, it all started from a practical reason/purpose.The headboard, a piece of furniture that is attached to the head of the bed, was initially an element that isolated sleepers from drafts and cold. Back then the buildings were less insulated and thus such a feature was needed. The headboards were made of wood because it’s a material that’s less conductive than stone or brick for example.

With time, this function has been lost and replaced by a purely aesthetical function. Headboards are mostly decorative now, although they do have a certain amount of functionality. Some may feature built-in or hidden storage space which can be used for storing books and other items. Heart Break Kids - Blog - My very own DIY Faux Fireplace. I do not have a fireplace. I have lamented before how this poses a decorating problem. (Okay. Seriously? If this is my biggest problem, my life is a fairytale! And it pretty much is...) Anyhow, I really wanted a fireplace. There are, per usual, a lot of photos in this post. Oh yes--I made that!!!!! I started with some reclaimed barn wood, two sets of bifold closet doors from the Habitat for Humanity ReStore, and some random cabinet doors. My husband helped me cut the doors to size, and I started painting.

After everything was painted, I started glazing it to give it a very old, worn look. Pretty cool, right? And then I attached the cabinet door to the bifold doors. Then the whole family got in on the action! We made a frame for the hearth out of some of the reclaimed barn wood and scrap wood, and then we attached the top of the hearth to the frame.
