Basics of the Unix Philosophy. The ‘Unix philosophy’ originated with Ken Thompson's early meditations on how to design a small but capable operating system with a clean service interface. It grew as the Unix culture learned things about how to get maximum leverage out of Thompson's design. It absorbed lessons from many sources along the way.

The Unix philosophy is not a formal design method. It wasn't handed down from the high fastnesses of theoretical computer science as a way to produce theoretically perfect software. Nor is it that perennial executive's mirage, some way to magically extract innovative but reliable software on too short a deadline from unmotivated, badly managed, and underpaid programmers. The Unix philosophy (like successful folk traditions in other engineering disciplines) is bottom-up, not top-down. Doug McIlroy, the inventor of Unix pipes and one of the founders of the Unix tradition, had this to say at the time [McIlroy78]: (i) Make each program do one thing well. Rule 1. The Moore's Law Moon Shot. Next generation: A technician at ASML works on a prototype machine for manufacturing computer chips based on extreme ultraviolet technology, a process that promises to keep chip components shrinking as they have for decades.

It is seemingly a fact of life that every new generation of computing gadget will be significantly more powerful than the one before, but a looming technical roadblock threatens to undermine that. That’s why the world’s largest chip maker, Intel, announced on Monday that it has invested $4 billion in Dutch company ASML, which makes equipment for manufacturing computer chips.

The two companies are trying to instigate a collaboration involving the world’s largest computing companies—in a kind of silicon moon shot—to ensure that chips keep getting faster by perfecting the tools needed to make smaller features on silicon chips. Intel recently launched its first generation of chips with features as small as 22 nanometers. Delays have also beset EUV. HTML5 vs. Apps: Why The Debate Matters, And Who Will Win. The wrong metrics force bad behavior in salespeople | QuotaCrush. By Mark LaRosa on January 17th, 2012 Metrics are used all over in sales organizations: How many calls did you make? How many connects did you make? How many meetings did you schedule? Metrics are how managers feel good about how people are doing – its how they can point to things and say, “look – my people are working.” Its no secret that I’m not a fan of managing to certain metrics in a start-up like number of dials.

Too many times, I see managers who focus on the wrong metrics and force behavior that ultimately leads to less (or worse) sales. In a start-up, you need to sell value to your prospect. There doesn’t exist a good sales intelligence tool, yet, that can bring all of that information together quickly and concisely for the salesperson so that they can make all of those calls quickly, and also be informed.

Being armed with good information is key to making sales more quickly. And make sure the metrics that you are tracking don’t get in the way of this. PHP is much better than you think. Rants about PHP are everywhere, and they even come from smart guys. When Jeff Atwood wrote yet another rant about PHP, it made me think about the good parts of PHP. The biggest problem of these rants is that they come from people stuck in the old days of PHP. They either don't care or they don't want to admit that PHP actually evolves at a very fast pace, both at the language level but also at the community level.

In fact, it evolves much faster than any other language or web platform. It has not always been the case, but the last 5 years have been an amazing journey for PHP. Before talking about the amazing things the PHP community has achieved recently, let's have a look at some interesting numbers: PHP is used by 77.9% of all the websites whose server-side programming language is known. PHP must have done something right, no? PHP, the Language PHP 5.0 (released in 2004) brought us a very solid object model... wait a minute, I'm talking about something released almost 8 years ago. Git. Is this what a "focused" Google looks like? - Google 24/7.

By Verne Kopytoff, contributor FORTUNE -- Last year, Larry Page, Google's chief executive, responded to criticism that his company had lost focus by promising to put "more wood behind fewer arrows. " Translation: Google would cull its bloated list of products so that engineers could attend to bigger priorities. To show that he was serious about focus, Page killed off Google Health, an online locker for digital health records, and PowerMeter, a little known service for tracking home utility consumption.

But staying focused is hard to do, as Google (GOOG) showed last week when it introduced a series of new products including a tablet computer, a home entertainment hub and a corporate computing service. Questions about Google's focus echo across Silicon Valley, where Apple's (AAPL) keep-it-simple business strategy is often lauded as the ideal. MORE: Does Apple have anything that can match Google Glass? To be sure, the company has occasionally killed duds or those that fell out of favor. 10 Things CEOs Need to Know About Web Site Design - Jason Putorti - Stanford Business School. UI-First Software Development. We're currently in the midst of building the new web property I alluded to in a previous post. Before I write a single line of code, I want to have a pretty clear idea of what the user interface will look like first. I'm in complete agreement with Rick Schaut here: When you're working on end-user software, and it doesn't matter if you're working on a web app, adding a feature to an existing application, or working on a plug-in for some other application, you need to design the UI first. This is hard for a couple of reasons. The first is that most programmers, particularly those who've been trained through University-level computer science courses, learned how to program by first writing code that was intended to be run via the command line. Of course, UI is hard, far harder than coding for developers. Remember, to the end user, the interface is the application.

It's certainly true that there are limitations on how the UI can be built based on the technology you're using. 9 Widgets that will Instantly Boost your Conversion Rate « Optimize It! Adding seals and badges to your e-commerce or lead generation site can provide an instant boost in conversion rate. In this post, we’ll take a look at a few of the most common, highlighting a site that uses each one. As always, it is important to test whether these help or not for your given site- and to determine if they give you a ROI.

Equally important to testing the presence of seals, is to test where you position them on the page. In most of the examples below, the seal appears below the footer- which is possibly the worst place on the page if you actually want people to see it. 1.
