Confirmed: Apple to Replace Defective 1st-Generation iPod Nanos With 1st-Generation Units. Apple told Mashable it will be replacing recalled first-generation iPod Nanos with first-generation Nanos, not the new ones many had hoped would be sent. Mashable talked with an Apple spokesperson on the phone, who confirmed the company will be sending first-generation iPod Nanos to those whose serial numbers match the units with defective batteries. SEE MORE: Apple Recalls First-Generation iPod Nanos When we asked Apple how many of those first-generation iPod Nanos were available for the recall, the company was not willing to reveal that information. We wanted to know why Apple wasn't more specific about which iPod Nanos would be used as replacements in its original announcement, but the company wouldn't answer that question, either. Do you think Apple was deliberately being vague about which Nanos would be sent as replacements?

Tool: Downloading Your Tweets with TweetDownload - Tools, Twitter. It is about time again we highlighted a tool on State of Search. Today we will be looking at a brand new one: TweetDownload. Have you ever had the urge to look back into a twitter conversation and then noted that it wasn’t that easy to do? For starters you have to “read backwards” on Twitter to understand the conversation. And on top of that Twitter only goes back four days. Things might just get better soon with the launch of “Tweet Download”, a third-party service which lets you back up your Twitter account including tweets, DMs, followers, friends, favorites and the entire conversation.

There are more services who let you download tweets, but TweetDownload.Net enables you to download up to 3,200 of your tweets or 800 tweets + up to 800 replies/mentions, creating a personal archive of data which you can store for safe-keeping and future reference. Kate Craig-Wood, MD of Memset who came up for the idea behind TweetDownload.Net told State of Search: Bas van den Beld.

Twitter.com Gets A Complete Redesign [SCREENSHOTS] During a press conference at its new headquarters in San Francisco, Twitter CEO Dick Costolo and co-founder Jack Dorsey today unveiled a brand new Twitter.com. The website and all apps have undergone a complete redesign: content has been moved, photos and videos will now be embedded, and each tweet is given a fuller context.

Check out more details and screenshots below.Search Engine Land live blogged the unveiling of the new redesign. Costolo and Dorsey explained that the new Twitter.com and its official apps are a “conceptual redesign”, not just a physical one. The “new Twitter is just the foundation that will enable us to innovate really quickly across all of our platforms,” says Costolo. AllThingsD reports that “new Twitter” is supposed to be 500 percent faster than Twitter was a few months ago, but that the pair was very clear in explaining that it is not a new feature or product – just a redesign to improve content and its context. So how does this redesign look? Yoono. 10 Great Things About The New Twitter #NewLook #NewTwitter #LetsFly. There haven’t been a lot of changes to Twitter as far as the look and feel since it launched. Almost a year ago Twitter launched a new look and I definitely agree that it was an improvement from the original look that we had all become accustomed to.

Well here we go again, as we approach 2012 Twitter has just launched an entirely new look and a cool little marketing name/campaign/hashtag to go with it. The hashtag and promoted campaign is #LetsFly. I guess flying has something to do with the bird. I am a big fan of Twitter and was one of the early, early adopters. Not only am I a fan of Twitter and it’s overall simplicity, but also I’m a fan of the New Twitter. Below are 10 Great Things About The New Twitter. 1. Those are my thoughts on the #NewTwitter and the #NewLook. What do you like, dislike, want to see, want to change, etc.? When Twitter impacts TV ratings the most [study] First on Lost Remote: Nielsen released an early glimpse today into its research project measuring Twitter’s impact on TV ratings. As we reported back in October, Nielsen’s first study — which did not include Twitter data — revealed that a 9% increase in buzz volume (blogs, boards and public Facebook updates) corresponded to a 1% increase in ratings among the 18-49 year-old demo.

But in recent weeks, Twitter has provided Nielsen with loads of data to measure its impact on ratings. On a conference call today, Nielsen’s Radha Subramanyam showed a couple slides mapping Twitter’s impact on ratings against time. While their earlier study found that social buzz can impact ratings weeks in advance, Twitter’s biggest impact is closest to airtime (above). As with any social-ratings research, there are caveats.

This analysis did not include sports or TV news, but Nielsen has plans to measure both. And then there’s the correlation-causality question. How To Make The Most Out of Twitter With Least Effort with Buffer App. As an avid Twitter user, I’ve never been averse to trying out third-party apps to improve my overall user experience. I’ve a habit of scheduling tweets and I strongly believe that’s one of the best ways to follow a well-defined tweeting schedule. It keeps my followers interested and ensures that there are no let-ups in my tweeting frequency. While there are hundreds of Twitter scheduling and analytical tools available, I’ve always been on the lookout for a third-party Twitter app which offers the best of all worlds – scheduling tweets, Twitter management, syndication exchange and last but not the least – uniform access from the web and mobile.

A friend of mine recommended that I try out Buffer App and I decided to give it a shot – the rest as they say is history! Why is Buffer App Special? Google Adds 3D Graphics to Google Maps. Google has released an upgrade to Google Maps that offers 3D-style graphics and lets you swoop into Street View without a plugin. The upgrade, called Google MapsGL, uses Google’s Web Graphics Library (the “GL” part) to bring 3D-like graphics to the browser. To use MapsGL, you have to have supported browsers like Chrome 14+ or Firefox Beta with compatible video cards. If that’s the case, go to Google Maps‘ homepage and you should see a prompt. Adapting GL to Google Maps is the company’s latest application of GL, which has been used in music videos and Google Body Browser, a sort of Google Earth for the human body. As Evan Parker, a software engineer at Google outlines in the video below, MapsGL also brings vector maps that are available on Android to the desktop and offers sharper satellite views that can now be smoothly rotated. New Gmail design. Google plans big changes for Reader. 21 October 2011Last updated at 12:41 Google has slowly been overhauling the look and feel of many of its core services Google is planning to strip some features from its Reader to boost the Google+ social network. In a blogpost, the company revealed that the sharing features on its RSS news reader would soon be removed. Instead, anyone wanting to share or highlight posts on blogs and websites will have to do so via integrated Google+ tools. Reader, like many other Google services, will also get a new look in the next few days. The blogpost by Google software engineer Alan Green said that the changes would be coming to Reader "in the next week". The first change will be the re-design to change how it looks and then it and Google+ will be brought "closer together". What this will mean, said Mr Green, is that Reader's own-brand social features, which allow users to share items they find interesting, will disappear.

The changes to Reader are one of many tweaks Google has made to its services. Adding Events To Google Calendar Via SMS (And More!) Why do Google+ Pages matter? When Google+ first revealed the new officially branded pages, I questioned their unique value.

Google+ is rolling out a feature that allows its users to make free conference calls within Hangouts. Google staffer Jarkko Oikarinen – also the inventor of Internet Relay Chat, the first-ever Internet chat function – used his Google+ page on Thursday to announce that outside phone calls can be placed from inside a Hangout. A Hangout is a virtual room that allows you to video chat with others.

That said, you no longer need a Google account or even a computer to join the conversation. A Hangout group can now call in anyone with a phone to listen in. This could not only lure more people to Google+ and grow its user base, but also has potential to revolutionize the way both party lines and conference calls are conducted — from holding meetings to making plans with friends and family. “We are constantly listening to feedback so that we can make Hangouts even better for Google+ users, and we're excited by the really cool ways people are using the product,” Oikarinen said.
