NHS calls for more investment in specialist diabetes care. NHS Diabetes is calling for more investment in specialist diabetes care to reduce the £600 million estimated excess spending on treating diabetes in hospital which has been identified in a new report. The NHS in England spends more than £2.3 billion a year on inpatient care for people with diabetes, irrespective of the condition for which they were admitted, and this represents 11% of total NHS inpatient care spending, says the report.

People with diabetes are more likely to be admitted to hospital and have longer stays than people of the same age without the condition, it notes. About £600 million of this £2.3 billion annual bill is estimated to be excess expenditure on diabetes, ie money spent over and above the sum spent on a population of the same age and gender without the condition. Inpatient care for someone with diabetes costs the NHS 35% more a year than care for someone of the same age without diabetes.

Nikken Europe - Nikken Wellness Home. Healthy Living...: Is the Body Mass Index the Best Measure for Health? There's a photo of plus size model, Tara Lynn, on the cover of French Elle causing quite a stir on Facebook. To date, more than 224,000 people "Liked" the image, more than 156,000 shared the image, and more than 71,000 commented on the image.

So what? That's a fair question. Although Tara's nude with her arms in strategic places, the image in isolation probably wouldn't have inspired me to write this article. What held my attention was the accompanying caption. The person who posted this image describes a gym that asked its patrons whether they want to be a mermaid or a whale. Not only does she choose to be a whale, she includes her Theory on Weight Gain, "We women, we gain weight because we accumulate so much wisdom and knowledge that there isn't enough space in our heads, and it spreads all over our bodies. Because you cannot judge health from appearance alone, the purpose of this article is to determine whether the body mass index (BMI) is the best measure for health. Again, so what? The Truth About Belly Fat | The Belly Off! Nutritionist. Being overweight or obese surely puts you at a high risk for disease.

But even more important than simply reading the number on the scale is where you carry your weight. Very simply, the size of your belly matters. On the flipside, if you carry more of your weight in your hips and thighs, you’re at less of a risk. Here’s the deal: There are different types of fat in the body: Visceral fat lies beneath the abdominal muscle, so is not visible. On the other hand, subcutaneous fat is right underneath the skin, so can be seen. We now know that those who have more belly fat, or visceral fat, are at a significantly higher heart disease and diabetes risk, among others. The reason for this is that visceral fat surrounds the vital organs. In general, most women carry more of their weight in their lower body and men carry more of their weight around their middle…and that lower body fat may be actually somewhat protective. So what can be done about this? First, measure your belly and see if you’re at risk. UK women top of obesity league, and men are second – EU survey | Society.

Britain has a high number of obese women. Photograph: Brian Harris/Rex Features Nearly a quarter (23.9%) of British women are obese, according to an EU study which found the proportion was the highest out of 19 countries surveyed. The statistics also showed British men are not far behind, with 22.1% being classed as obese, coming second only to Malta. Weight problems are statistically measured using the body mass index (BMI) of adults, with obesity being defined as a BMI of over 30.

The research, which was based on data from 2008-2009, showed that the proportion of obese people in Europe's adult population varied between 8% and 23.9% for women, and between 7.6% 24.7% for men. The study, published by the European commission, shows no systematic difference in obesity between men and women – the proportion of obesity was higher in men in 10 member states, higher for women in eight, and equal in one country, Greece.

The herb Echinacea purpurea is one of the best known and widely available herbal cold treatments. Recent study results have been negative, but its effectiveness may vary depending on the preparation. Two studies funded by the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine found no benefit from echinacea in a juice formulation or in an unrefined combination of root and herb.

However, David Leopold, MD, recommends mixing 15 to 20 drops of an echinacea tincture with warm water four or five times a day (or as directed on the bottle). "It tends to be a little more potent than pills," says Dr. Leopold, who is the director of integrative medical education at the Scripps Center for Integrative Medicine and a faculty member with the Scripps Natural Supplement Conference, in La Jolla, Calif.

Nov. 22, 2011 -- There's been a big spike in the number of people who need emergency medical attention after they guzzle popular caffeinated energy drinks, according to a new government report. The report shows a more than a tenfold increase in the number of emergency room visits tied to the use of these drinks between 2005 and 2009.

Exercise best medicine for disease (IANS) / 13 November 2011 Fitness is the best medicine to prevent and manage chronic disease, a leading cause of deaths worldwide. 'Obesity is just a symptom of an underlying disease-sedentary lifestyle. It is low fitness which is killing us, not being overweight,' said Robert Newton, professor at the Edith Cowan University School of Exercise, Biomedical and Health Sciences.

Newton cited the current battle against obesity as ineffective in curbing rising rates of chronic disease as well as the associated costs while addressing a conference of Sports Medicine Australia. 'Exercise is the most effective medicine for the prevention and management of chronic disease, a problem that's responsible for around 80 percent of our healthcare expenditure,' Newton says, according to an Edith Cowan statement. 'The risk of mortality of someone who is normal weight but unfit is about three times higher than the mortality risk of someone who is obese but fit,' he adds. The Athlete's Heart Blog. Depression May Slow Exercise Recovery. Alcohol and you in the festive season - Inspiring Fitness - www.inspiringfitness.co.uk. We all like an alcoholic drink but are you aware of how much you are drinking and what its effect is on your body?

Don’t worry you are not the only one, most people are not aware of how many safe units they can drink daily or really what alcohol does to your body other than having a hangover, and feeling below par. Recommended guidelines Research from the Department of Health suggests the recommended guidelines are that a man should not regularly drink more than 3-4 alcohol units a day (equivalent to a pint and a half of 4% beer) and a woman should not regularly exceed 2-3 units a day (equivalent to a 175ml glass of 13% wine). What is an alcohol unit? One alcohol unit is measured as 10ml or 8g of pure alcohol. This equals one 25ml single measure of whisky (ABV 40%), or a third of a pint of beer (ABV 5-6%) or half a standard (175ml) glass of red wine (ABV 12%).

Work out your alcohol units for yourself with this formula: Strength (ABV) x Volume (ml) ÷ 1000 = No. of units. Example "Cheers! But what would a diet of spiders and flies, mouse tails and camel toes do to the body? Yes - in part, say experts, if eaten with fruit and vegetables to provide missing vitamins and minerals. "It's estimated that about 70% of the world's population eats insects as a regular part of their diet," says entomologist Stuart Hine, from the insect department at London's Natural History Museum.

"They have about the same amount of protein per 100g as cheese, eggs, fish and meat. Continue reading the main story Worldwide jungle hit. NHS calls for more investment in specialist diabetes care. Hairy limbs keep bed bugs at bay. 14 December 2011Last updated at 08:35 The bed bug feeds on blood Hairier skin may be the key to avoiding being bitten by bed bugs, claim Sheffield academics. Hungry bugs placed on shaved arms were more likely to try to feed compared with those on unshaved arms, the journal Biology Letters reported. Researchers say the hair slows down the bed bugs and warns the victim. Pest controllers say the UK is currently experiencing a steep rise in the number of bed bug infestations.

Prof Michael Siva-Jothy, from Sheffield University's Department of Animal and Plant Sciences, recruited 29 brave volunteers to test the theory further, watching the bedbugs as they found a place to feed and removing them only as they were about to bite. He found that more layers of both longer visible hairs and finer, "vellus" hairs near the surface appeared to work as a deterrent to the insects, with the finer hairs also acting as an early warning system. Dec. 14, 2011 -- It can be an all too common scenario for certain stroke survivors. They can’t see or recognize anything on one side of their body. This condition often occurs after a stroke on the right side of the brain and is typically treated with a combination of physical therapy and brain retraining or mental tasks using a pen and paper or computer. This is often not enough to make a meaningful improvement. Now new research in Neurology suggests that stimulating the nerve cells in the brain with magnet therapy may aid recovery. After a stroke, one side of the brain can become overactive and its circuits can get overloaded. And according to the new study, it helps. Continue reading below... Sports And Knee Health: 4 Tips For Protecting Against Osteoarthritis. Not all sports are equal when it comes to preserving your knees. A new study suggests that elite-level (professional, Olympic or national level), long distance running, weight-lifting and wrestling, as well as elite and non-elite (recreational or school-level) soccer are linked with an increased risk of knee osteoarthritis. On the other hand, the researchers didn't find a link between many other sports and knee osteoarthritis. "These are also sports that are associated with a high risk of injury and/or high intensive loading on the joints, like weight lifting," study researcher Jeffrey Driban, Ph.D., an assistant professor in the division of rheumatology at Tufts University, told HuffPost. Driban's research was presented this month at the American College of Rheumatology Annual Scientific Meeting in Chicago.
