Every Saturday here at the Labs we like to get in about a bit of soul or funk. Our collection so far was sadly lacking some Aretha so it’s time to correct that wee oversight. Quite rightly known as the “Queen of Soul”, she was also picked as the ninth greatest vocalist of all time by Rolling Stone and no music collection is complete without her. I’ve picked out a particular favourite of mine but her back catalogue is packed to the brim with absolute classics so expect to see her popping up time and time again. 2011 seemed to be the year of anonymous production and a guessing game for those following the bass music scene. Whether it was putting a face to "Sicko Cell", or if that unreleased track by Joy Orbison was called "Ellipsis" or "Source Delight", it proved to be a year full of nameless tracks that kept fans and artists alike on their toes. Just as 2011 came to a close, it seemed as though most of our unreleased questions were answered. Among many others, a handful of highly anticipated tracks by Boddika , Scuba , George Fitzgerald , and Addison Groove , all saw releases in the massive DJ Kicks compilation/mix by Scuba . While most had been celebrating the holidays with their families and enjoying their time off, a small handful of us were feeling the music withdrawals harder than ever—myself included. Off a tip from Dummy Mag , I was brought to the YouTube channel of Evian Christ , a stark page with eight dubious looking uploads.
Coming straight from the NYC electronic scene is Get Right Records’ next big producer, Bailey Smalls with his first official release, ‘Baby I Love It’. Some of you might remember this track from Small World Radio Vol. 1 a few weeks ago, but now not only do we have the full track for you, but as a bonus GRR released a nice remix by Jay Fay with some dirrrty bass for your listening pleasures.
