Chess is a classic game that often looks as good as it plays. Like all the finer things in life, a good chess set is a sensual experience; it should look good, the pieces should feel good in your hand... hell, I've seen hand-carved wooden pieces that smelled good! One of my favorite discoveries in the world of chess sets has been Straight Up Chess , a product that turns the game into an actual piece of art. The concept is a simple, if brilliant one.

The latest (false) cheating scandal in international chess soiled the Vandoeuvre Open in France during the last week in December. Latvian grandmasters were fazed by the strong performance of Anna Rudof, who was unexpectedly leading the tournament. The disgruntled GMs accused the Hungarian phenom of cheating. The pattern of these nebulous accusations is often the same, as in Toiletgate and Toddlergate : a successful player is accused of going to the bathroom too often and having physical or wireless access to a chess-playing computer. In Rudolf’s case, suspicion centered on her lip balm, which was said to be a wireless device for communicating with a remote silicon adviser. To her chagrin, the organizers confiscated her handbag and lip balm before the key round.

That's Nate Jellis on the Loch Ness monster at Busch Gardens, Virginia. They had trouble sneaking the board and pieces on the coaster, and had to tape them on as they were going up. The souvenier photo didn't work out but they snapped this shot with a camera smuggled on-board.Chess is an exercise of infinite possibilities for the mind, one which develops mental abilities used throughout life: concentration, critical thinking, abstract reasoning, problem solving, pattern recognition, strategic planning, creativity, analysis, synthesis, and evaluation, to name a few. Chess can be used very effectively as a tool to teach problem solving and abstract reasoning. Learning how to solve a problem is more important than learning the solution to any particular problem. Through chess, we learn how to analyze a situation by focusing on important factors and by eliminating distractions. We learn to devise creative solutions and put a plan into action.

It is generally assumed that chess originated in India , 5-7 centuries after the birth of Christ. At that time, the game was not as we know it. During the course of history, many variants of the game were tried.SchemingMind.com does not only support traditional 'Standard' Chess; several chess variants which use the same board and pieces can also be played. Some of these are very similar to Standard Chess (for example with different starting positions), some are different games in their own right, but all are great fun to play! The idea of making a collection of Fantastic Moves began with Shirov's 47...Bh3 against Topalov in this year's Linares. It inspired British Chess Magazine to have a poll for the 'Most Amazing Move of All Time' and this in turn, as a lifelong collector of the bizarre and the beautiful in chess, inspired me. The more so as, however laudible their initiative was, BCM's shortlist of 50 Amazing Moves was rather disappointing. It missed too many truly amazing moves - even my number one - and included too many moves that were spectacular, beautiful, famous, and the first that most players would consider. My list of 110 Fantastic Moves (due to reader response, I had to change the title midway) shares only 17 moves with the BCM list of 50 - but 7 with their top 10.

Negamax Search This is the fundamental structure around which the rest of chess tree searching algorithms are based. To put it simply, Negamax tree searching implements the idea that "The worse your opponent's best reply is, the better your move." Implementing this is surprisingly easy. It uses the fact that chess is a symmetric game, and that therefore the analysis function must give symmetric scoring. That is to say that at any point, the score for white is exactly minus the score for black, or equivalently the sum of the two scores always equals zero.If you play chess for blood, it makes sense to learn the violent tactics that feature in the openings that you play. More practical than taking in tactical themes by general category – knight forks, clearance, back-rank mates, and so on – is to learn them in the context of your openings. Your knowledge of the lines makes these combinations much more interesting, and in turn the combinations teach you about the dangers that lurk for both players in that opening system.
