Director Alfred Hitchcock is one of East London's most famous exports -- the Hollywood legend was born and brought up in Leytonstone.

Sadly, little evidence of his life there remains. A blue plaque marks the site of Hitchcock's birthplace, above the family's greengrocer's shop at 517 High Road, Leytonstone. The building was demolished many years ago to make way for a petrol station and fried chicken shop. But the director's links with the area are celebrated in other ways: At Leytonston tube station, on the Central Line, the walls are decorated with mosaic murals featuring scenes from Hitchcock's life and films. Hitchcock was already a big name in the British movie business before he and his family moved to the U.S. in 1939. Hitchcock frequently used instantly recognizable London landmarks as the backdrops to some of his most famous set-pieces: The British Museum's domed roof is the scene of the climax of 1929's "Blackmail.

Street Feast is London's pioneering night market. Every Friday and Saturday we bring together London’s best street food traders, chefs and restaurants, and serve giant festival-style pint-sized cocktails, craft beer and great wine, for quite a unique eating experience. Since launching in May 2012 we have transformed car parks, breweries, warehouses, old tube stations, and builders merchants to create a whole new way to eat, drink and hang out. We have just completed our 10 week run at Hawker House, our indoor haven for lovers of good food and drink. We're now at the start of a little break before Street Feast returns to Dalston Yard on the 16/17 May for the whole spring and summer. We'll also be making our debut in South East London with a new hawker style venue down there.

Blow off: become a hair-styling pro at The Blow Bar. Like most girls, my post-shower hair prep consists of tipping my head upside down, pointing my 5-year old dryer vaguely in the right direction and hoping for the best. The Blow Bar, however, promised to transform my pitiful skills into those of a styling pro by teaching me the techniques of a perfect blow dry.

The knowledgeable Emma lead the workshop (never made up of more than six pupils) and there were only four other blow dry pupils in my group. She managed to ensure that everyone was given equal guidance and attention and picked the best products for each person’s hair type, before teaching us how to hold the brush and negotiate the hairdryer at the same time – easy when you know how! The classes take place in a private room above the salon and there’s a tangible sense of both luxury and exclusivity – helped along by a complimentary glass or two of Champagne. The tipple was welcome given that the class isn’t cheap: £79 for 90 minutes. For info, see theblowbar.co.uk. The way to see Britain? Take to the open rail - UK - Travel. On the table in front of me is a rail map and, awaiting the arrival of the inspector, my ticket. But this is no ordinary ticket; this is the Rail Rover. It is the only rail ticket in the country with an option that has not increased in price for almost eight years. The 14-day Rail Rover last went up in 2004 (the seven-day version last increased in 2008), and, fantastically, it will allow me to travel on almost every single train in the country. The National Rail Rover is one of the railway industry's hidden secrets. For £650, or £429 with a railcard (or £429 for a seven-day pass, £284 with a railcard), anyone can walk up and buy a ticket that allows them to travel the length and breadth of the entire country. Given that a walk-up fare from Penzance to Inverness is £215, the Rail Rover can, if used extensively, represent monumental savings. It's only the start of a relaxing ride as I pass Reading for Pewsey.

They are useful for rooting around in the sand along the base of the cliffs at Yaverland, where every rock you pick up seems to contain a fossil. When I visited, the autumnal gales had kicked in, hurling spray and waves at the battered cliffs, loosening the soil and releasing more fossils for hardy amateur collectors. I'd dropped down to Yaverland beach, north of Sandown, as part of a walk that takes in the rich wildlife and history of a strangely enigmatic easterly point of the island. Starting in Brading, south of Ryde, I was immediately struck by how diligently the island waymarks its paths. Almost all footpath signs come with a number as well as the destination. And so, I dutifully took footpath number SS44 through the Brading Marshes nature reserve. After collecting several modest fossils – 65 million-year-old oyster shells, according to Alex, a passionately knowledgeable guide at the nearby Dinosaur Isle museum – I clambered up the heathland that runs above the beach.
