Despite the risks and discomfort, I can’t tell you how thrilling it was to see this barren, remote corner of the world by horseback. For me, travelling this way is one of the best adventures you can have. You feel incredibly connected to the landscape, working in harmony with these beautiful animals. There are few better ways of seeing the world. A great British tradition Texas cowboy country was a far cry from where my riding adventures began, on the slightly less wild plains of Sussex as a child. Here in Britain, I think horse riding is in our DNA – just look at the success of our equestrians at the Olympics – and there are all sorts of riding opportunities in this country, from endurance treks to gentle outings for first-time riders. Studland in Dorset must rank among the most beautiful places to head out on horseback on these shores.
