Big Data Tools. Stats & SPSS resources. General Social Survey. The GSS contains a standard 'core' of demographic, behavioral, and attitudinal questions, plus topics of special interest.

General Social Survey

Many of the core questions have remained unchanged since 1972 to facilitate time-trend studies as well as replication of earlier findings. The GSS takes the pulse of America, and is a unique and valuable resource. It has tracked the opinions of Americans over the last four decades. Trends The GSS is widely regarded as the single best source of data on societal trends. General Social Survey Resources developed at Queens College.

Series. The General Social Surveys (GSS) have been conducted by the National Opinion Research Center annually since 1972, except for the years 1979, 1981, and 1992 (a supplement was added in 1992), and biennially beginning in 1994.

For each round of surveys, the Roper Center for Public Opinion Research prepares a cumulative dataset that merges previous years of the GSS into a single file, with each year or survey constituting a subfile. The content of each survey changes slightly as some items are added to or deleted from the interview schedule.

Main areas covered in the GSS include socioeconomic status, social mobility, social control, the family, race relations, sex relations, civil liberties, and morality. Topical modules designed to investigate new issues or to expand the coverage of an existing subject have been part of the GSS since 1977, when the first module on race, abortion, and feminism appeared. The dataset links labeled "Quick Tables" use a simplified user interface for generating basic crosstabulations (from a pre-selected subset of the variables in the study). The other dataset links use the standard SDA interface (4.0 or 3.5 version). Social Network Analysis. Social network analysis [SNA] is the mapping and measuring of relationships and flows between people, groups, organizations, computers, URLs, and other connected information/knowledge entities.

Social Network Analysis

The nodes in the network are the people and groups while the links show relationships or flows between the nodes. SNA provides both a visual and a mathematical analysis of human relationships. Management consultants use this methodology with their business clients and call it Organizational Network Analysis [ONA]. To understand networks and their participants, we evaluate the location of actors in the network. Measuring the network location is finding the centrality of a node. We look at a social network -- the "Kite Network" above -- developed by David Krackhardt, a leading researcher in social networks.
