Gyre Facts • A Gyre is a naturally occurring vortex of wind and currents that rotate in a clockwise direction in the northern hemisphere and counter-clockwise in the southern hemisphere. These create a whirlpool effect, whose vortex moves more slowly at the center and that is where marine plastic debris collects. • There are 5 major Gyres in the oceans worldwide, all of which are believed to contain plastic and persistent organic pollutants (POPs).
These consist of carbon-containing chemical compounds that, to a varying degree, resist photochemical, biological and chemical degradation. • The North Pacific Gyre, also known as the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, is estimated to be twice the size of Texas and swirls in the Pacific Ocean roughly between the coast of California and Hawaii. Marketplace of Ideas. The Garrison Institute's Initiative on Contemplation and Education, in collaboration with the Kirlin Charitable Foundation, recently convened the leadership forum Mindful Parenting: Conceptualization and Measurement. This event brought together researchers, clinicians and others interested in and working with family intervention programs. The aim of the meeting was to address measurement issues around the topics of mindful parenting and reflective functioning in parenting, in order to develop effective measurement systems for use in research.
During the three days of the meetings, the group spent the majority of their time together in group discussion, sharing one another's work involved, raising pertinent issues to be addressed during future clinical trials and research, and considering the questions, "What is mindful parenting? And what indicators of mindful parenting are evident in parenting behavior? " Resources | The Hawn Foundation. Pathways_to_Prosperity_Feb2011. _Casebook.
Over 100 ideas for using Twitter in the Classroom. This handful of resources provide about 100 different ideas for, and examples of, using Twitter in the classroom. It’s been almost 8 months since I published the post, “6 Examples of Using Twitter in the Classroom”, about uses of the popular micro-blogging tool in the instructional setting. This post generated a lot of traffic, and continues to attract hundreds of viewers every week. Since that brief posting, I’ve come across a lot of articles containing examples and suggestions for using Twitter in instructional applications. I’ve combed through many of these and tried to boil down the redundancies to create a rich set of idea-laden resources. I also want to mention these 100 Serious Twitter Tips for Academics, which are worth reviewing to learn more and plan your approach to using Twitter in (and out of) the classroom.

I slept in, halfheartedly ran a few errands, accumulated flowers wherever I went, and spent a good amount of time arranging poppies & peonies into a hodgepodge of mason jars and vases. Flowers aside, I dedicated ten minutes making this chocolate cake. It's the ultimate lazy chocolate dessert. And while I think of it as a no bake chocolate cake, you wouldn't be far off if you called it a slice-able truffle. If you have a some dark chocolate, cream, and something to infuse the cream with, you're in business. This is the sort of thing I'll throw together if we're having friends over for dinner and I run out of steam on the dessert front.
It's less trouble to make than it is to go out and buy something. The choice of pan warrants a mention. Lightly butter a 6-inch / 15cm springform pan or equivalent - I typically use little loaf pans which are less common, but many small pans will work here (see main entry). Serves 12. Print Recipe. Gluten-Free Chocolate Biscotti. Intro I was both honored and slightly frightened when Shauna (Gluten-Free Girl) asked me to bake a Gluten-Free Thanksgiving recipe.
I’ve made a few gluten-free items before but they were completely flour-free. This time I wanted to challenge myself and have fun playing with completely new-to-me flours. I love a good challenge. Now I understand that you may be confused as to why I chose Biscotti as a Thanksgiving baked good. Well, it may be partially because I happen to be craving Biscotti but also I do think that it is the perfect light breakfast or tea time snack to have when a rather large meal in eminent. As I mentioned in my last post I don’t do much of the cooking on Thanksgiving. But what I can bring is a little sweet snack for the busy cooks. My husband was leery of my biscotti. There was a nice crunch from the coarsely ground almonds that made up the almond flour. At first, it took time to adjust to Apple’s version of a tablet computer. “It’s kind of hard to type,” he said, pointing out the device has a virtual keyboard instead of an actual one. But Klein, 14, who will be entering the eighth grade this fall, got used to using the device and now enjoys it. “You get more work done with it,” he said. Now the Chippewa Falls School District is trying to see if Klein is right. It wants to know if students are learning more by using the computer tablets than those using the typical pen and paper to do their classwork.
So the district has enlisted the help of the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse to study the academic progress of summer school students. One math class of teacher Melissa Rasmus is using the traditional pen and pad way. Rasmus has been impressed by the difference the iPads are making. “They save space,” he said of the tablets. UDLCAST's Channel Perfect Iced Coffee.
Iced coffee is my life. When I wake up, often around the time party animals on the west coast are just heading home, I start each day not with a cup of freshly brewed hot java, but with a tall, blessed glass of creamy iced coffee in a glass. I’ve been an iced coffee freakazoid for years and years. To say I couldn’t live without it is an understatement. It gives me the tools I need to cope. Iced coffee is a complicated thing, and there are many different approaches. 1. Given the previous set of facts, one would assume that the logical solution would be to brew hot coffee, then transfer the brew to the fridge, allow it to cool, and use it to make iced coffee from there.
There are reasons this method results in a smoother, richer, more delicious concentrate than simply brewing strong coffee and refrigerating it. (Note: I’ve totally adapted/tweaked coffee/water amounts to suit my own tastes. I start with a big ol’ container. Rip open a pound of ground coffee. Pour in the coffee. Glorious. Digital Storytelling. The Book Thief. Share Video Based on its title, you might think that The Book Thief is a spy thriller or a Holmes-style detective story.
But really, this is the emotional story of a young girl living in Germany during the Holocaust. Yep, a ten-year-old girl is the title's thief. And the books she's stealing aren't top-secret documents— they're just... books. If you got caught stealing books today, you'd get in serious trouble (or at least accumulate a staggering library fine). She's the chief book thief—but by no means the only book thief—in the novel.
