Del Toro is something of a design fetishist, like Tim Burton. I'm not saying that like it's a bad thing, but he does have a very distinct look, and much of that is due to stylistic sensibilities in set and set dressing, costume and creature design that seem to inform his other choices as a creator. Burton's is Disney meets Corman/Price meets Rankin/Bass. In Del Toro's case it's very fussily detailed, a patina of antiquity, familiar monsters that are somewhat tweaked and given more texture to become less familiar. In both their cases there's arguably a predominance, maybe even an excess, of design.
