TOKIDOKI | a world travel photo blog by Jackie Hadel. What is a Virgin? * What follows is a germ of a longer and more detailed piece. The names, dates and places related to this court case have been omitted in order to protect the anonymity of the plaintiffs. In recent years, the Lebanese Druze Court of Appeals adjudicated a particularly ugly divorce.
The case concerned a young couple who had recently been married and divorced by the Druze Court of First Instance, which had found both members of the couple equally responsible for the failure of their marriage. Undeterred, the wife and husband have filed separate appeals at the Druze Court of Appeals, but for opposing reasons. The husband has sought to overturn the ruling, which grants favorable terms of divorce to his wife, arguing that his wife is at fault for the divorce and thus should not benefit from alimony or financial settlement. The wife seeks to modify the ruling to increase the alimony owed her and wishes to be declared innocent of any wrongdoing. Ecce Hommos.
Hummus isn’t enough « the human province. Migrant workers. On the Hypocrisy of Gay Activism. Loading ... 476 views There has been an uproar recently about an incident that took place in Kayan, a popular bar in the Gemayze district of Beirut in which a group of around eight gay men were allegedly refused service for no apparent reason other than their sexual orientation. People are rightly outraged at this treatment, and have called for a boycott of the bar in response. If the story about Kayan’s homophobia is true, then I certainly support taking action to pressure them into thinking twice before refusing service to anyone for such a frivolous reason. But since this whole incident began, something about it sat uncomfortably with me. For months, I have heard people justify the behavior of gay bars that discriminate against trans customers – from flimsy excuses of not dividing the community to calls to understand that these bars are already under attack for being identified as gay hangouts and so we should cut them some slack.
This isn’t only about sexuality. Gynecology, Honor, and the Special Tribunal for Lebanon. Last week Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah gave a speech on honor. However, this speech was not about the honor of resisting occupation or the honor of the Palestinian cause. The Sayyed’s speech, rather, focused on how the Special Tribunal For Lebanon had threatened the honor of Lebanese citizens by requesting gynecological files from a women’s clinic in the southern suburbs of Beirut. The day before, when the STL investigators arrived at the women’s health clinic, a group of women attacked them and confiscated one of their briefcases. Finally, the STL investigators retreated. Of course, when the Sayyed said that the honor of Lebanese citizens had been violated by the STL, he meant that of Lebanese male citizens. A confession. I am not a fan of the Special Tribunal for Lebanon. The Sayyed revealed many disturbing facts.
He had me at university files. As the Sayyed said, the “women of” the leadership of Hezbollah use this specific gynecology clinic.
