J ERUSALEM (Reuters) -- Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert threatened on February 1 a "disproportionate response" to the continued firing of rockets into Israel from the Hamas-ruled Gaza Strip. There have been sporadic rocket attacks by militants on southern Israeli communities and several Israeli air strikes in the Gaza Strip since a truce came into effect on January 18 following a 22-day Israeli offensive in the territory. At least two rockets struck southern Israel on February 1, causing no damage or casualties. A wing of Al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades, a group belonging to Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas's Fatah faction, claimed responsibility. "The government's position was from the outset that if there is shooting at the residents of the south, there will be a harsh Israeli response that will be disproportionate," Olmert said at the weekly cabinet meeting after the latest rocket salvo. http://www.rferl.org/Content/Israel_Vows_Disproportionate_Response_To_Rockets/1377551.html

The original purpose of the clinic, according to press releases, was to provide emergency care and evacuate those needing further care to hospitals in Israel. Gynaecologists, paediatricians, general practitioners and trauma specialists were available at the clinic, which was operated by the Health Ministry and Mada (Israel’s national emergency, disaster, ambulance and blood bank service).
On Sunday, I posted that I think that Hamas would come out stronger from the Israeli attack on Gaza. On January 7th, Muhammed Hassanein Heikal, in a long_interview on Al Jazeera, apparently agrees on that. For American readers Heikal (read an English bio here) is by far the most important, famous and respected journalist in the Arab world. He was the Editor- in- Chief of the Egyptian newspaper Al-Ahram from 1957- 1974 which during his tenure was often refered to as the New York Times of the Arab world.
