Basic Principles of Genetics: Mendel's Genetics

It was somewhat of a hit or miss process since the actual mechanisms governing inheritance were unknown. Knowledge of these genetic mechanisms finally came as a result of careful laboratory breeding experiments carried out over the last century and a half. Genetics. Genetics (from the Ancient Greek γενετικός genetikos meaning "genitive"/"generative", in turn from γένεσις genesis meaning "origin"),[1][2][3] a field in biology, is the science of genes, heredity, and variation in living organisms.[4][5] Mendel observed that organisms inherit traits by way of discrete "units of inheritance".

Genetics

This term, still used today, is a somewhat ambiguous definition of a gene. A more modern working definition of a gene is a portion (or sequence) of DNA that codes for a known cellular function. Heritability. Ssume a breeder wants to select a population for a quantitative trait.

Heritability

The question arises as to how successful that selection program might be. Quantitative traits are quite different from those inherited as simple Mendelian traits. Canine Inherited Disorders Database. Welcome to the homepage for the Canine Inherited Disorders Database (CIDD). a joint initiative of the Sir James Dunn Animal Welfare Centre at the Atlantic Veterinary College, University of Prince Edward Island, and the Canadian Veterinary Medical Association.

Canine Inherited Disorders Database

Originally developed between 1998 and 2001, the database has recently been redesigned and the contents are currently being reviewed and updated (projected completion June 2012). The goals of the database are to reduce the incidence of inherited disorders in dogs by providing information to owners and breeders, and to facilitate the best management possible of these conditions by providing current information to veterinarians. In some cases the disease either has, or is believed to have, a genetic, hereditary cause but many of the diseases listed here do not have a proven genetic basis. German Shepherd Dogs are very popular and so the identification of a large number of diseases within the breed may simply be a reflection of the large numbers of the breed in modern society. Heterogeneous Sympathetic Innervation in German Shepherd Dogs With Inherited Ventricular Arrhythmia and Sudden Cardiac Death. MIBG Scintigraphy We used [123I]MIBG to assess the function of sympathetic nerve endings. It has been well established that MIBG is taken up by sympathetic nerves in a manner similar to norepinephrine but is not metabolized.9 11 Because MIBG is initially localized to neuronal and nonneuronal sites in dog myocardium,12 we performed the imaging studies 3 hours after injection.

Localization at this time is primarily in neuronal sites.12 Although there is a correlation between tissue norepinephrine and MIBG localization, the distribution of MIBG most closely depicts the distribution of sympathetic neurons with functioning uptake mechanisms. Medical management of perianal fistula. Management of perianal fistula has been a challenge for pet owners and their veterinarian. Treatment has historically been surgical debridement combined with long courses of antibiotics. Results were often disappointing with a high recurrence rate, and, occasional complications such as fecal incontinence or anal stricture.

Based on a positive response to many dogs to immunosuppressive drug, an immunologic basis for the disease is now suspected. In 1996 a study described 27 dogs given prednisone and a novel protein diet. The prednisone dose (plus antibiotics) given was 1 mg/lb/day for two weeks, then 0.44 mg/lb/day for another four weeks, then 0.44 mg/lb every other day (adjusted as necessary to keep fistulation to a minimum). 01 Megaesophagus. What is Megaesophagus? The esophagus is the tube connecting the throat to the stomach. When food is perceived in the esophagus, a neurologic reflex causing sequential muscle contraction and relaxation leads to rapid transport of the food into the stomach, like an elevator going down. Other reflexes prevent breathing during this swallowing process to protect the lungs from aspiration. When these reflexes are interrupted, such as by disease in the esophageal tissue or nerve disease, the esophagus loses its ability to transport food.

Panosteitis. Panosteitis is a spontaneously occurring lameness that usually occursin large breed dogs. German Shepherds seems to be particularly predisposedto this condition. Due to this, it is possible that the disease may havegenetic causes. Some veterinarians feel that this disease may be inducedor worsened by stress. Affected dogs are usually in the 5 to 14 month age range and male dogsare more commonly infected than female dogs. Canine Bloat - Tufts Breeding & Genetics 2003. Merck Veterinary Manual.
