But subsequent reductions in public spending amidst a period of low growth have increasingly impacted upon the public and voluntary sectors. At the beginning of 2010, 59% of charities reported that they were affected by the recession. During each quarter of 2011, the majority of voluntary sector leaders surveyed reported that the financial situation of their organisation had worsened over the previous 12 months.

By Andrew Holt Charities that use doorstep fundraisers, unsolicited home phone calls and high street charity canvassers (‘chuggers’) are damaging their reputation and putting people off supporting their cause according to a survey by donations website easyfundraising.org.uk. 60% of the online survey of over 1,000 people in the UK said that ‘chuggers’ in particular would put them off supporting the charity they represented, and over 40% have actually stopped supporting a charity specifically because of concerns over their aggressive fundraising techniques.

The most aggressive fundraising method according to 54% of respondents was seen as doorstep canvassing, followed by chuggers at 44% and home phone calls at 42%. One in seven people actually felt threatened by high street ‘chuggers’ and around one fifth of the sample said that they had felt pressured by doorstep or on street canvassers into signing a donation agreement on the spot that they had later regretted.

The death of Claire Squires in the London marathon - and subsequent influx of donations to the Samaritans - have drawn attention to the size of Britain's charities. The money is a huge boost to the Samaritans, who raised £6.7m in the latest year available, 2010 - according to this data from the Charities Aid Foundation (CAF). CAF collects the data by interrogating the Charity Commission database. The figure for each charity is a full year's data - but many organisations have different collecting periods. While some charities have turnovers that would put a major company to shame, others have much more modest means.
