Soil-transmitted helminth infections: ascariasis, trichuriasis, and hookworm. BMC Public Health | Full text | Prevention, control, and elimination of neglected diseases in the Americas: Pathways to integrated, inter-programmatic, inter-sectoral action for health and development. BioMed Central | Full text | Neglected diseases of neglected populations: Thinking to reshape the determinants of health in Latin America and the Caribbean. Rationale Every day thousands of people living in poverty get sick and suffer or die of preventable, communicable diseases throughout the world. This accounts for the major difference in the magnitude of mortality and morbidity rates between developed and developing countries. Among the communicable diseases, the NDs such as lymphatic filariasis may be considered proxy indicators of the level of socioeconomic development [15], and communicable diseases are pervasive in countries or regions where gross national product is low or income distribution highly skewed [16].

Some of these diseases would cease to exist with an increase of the gross national product and a more balanced income distribution. A. In order to successfully develop an agenda for NDs in neglected populations, it is important to consider the contextual determinants of health. Intrinsic determinants Intrinsic determinants of disease are biological in nature (i.e., genetic makeup, immune response). Extrinsic determinants B. Reductions in the Prevalence and Incidence of Geohelminth Infections following a City-wide Sanitation Program in a Brazilian Urban Centre. Abstract Objective In the city of Salvador, a large urban centre in Northeast Brazil, a city-wide sanitation intervention started in 1997, aimed at improving the sewerage coverage of households from 26% to 80%. Our aim was to study the impact of the intervention on the prevalence and incidence of geohelminths in the school-aged population.

Methods The study comprised two comparable cohorts: the first assembled in 1997, before the intervention, and the second assembled in 2003, after the intervention. Findings 729 and 890 children aged 7–14 years (mean = 10.4 y, SD = 0.05 y) were analysed over the first and the second cohorts, respectively. Conclusion Our results show that a city-wide sanitation program may reduce significantly the prevalence and incidence of geohelminths.

As mentioned earlier, Ascariasis could remain asymptomatic but could be fatal if the infection is severe. Children is more prevalence to the infection, thus we're going to discuss the sequelae and complications on children more. Complications of Ascariasis arisen due to 2 important process. 1) Obstruction 2) Migration In Ascariasis, if the worm burden is too severe, it might be huge enough to form a clump, called worm bolus which can obstruct the intestinal lumen. Problems arisen due to the obstruction. Malabsorption is another severe complication of Ascariasis in children. Another complication arisen when there is migration of adult worm from the intestine to elsewhere of the body. The migration of worm can causes problems at the site of migration.
