Ending world hunger is possible – so why hasn't it been done? | Duncan Green. Save the Children is to be applauded for reminding us all of one of the most extraordinary and humiliating aspects of living in the modern world: child hunger. Drawing a parallel with the fight to abolish slavery, the Ghanaian philosopher Kwame Anthony Appiah recently asked what future generations will condemn us for. One sure candidate is the needless human carnage wrought by hunger. Some 850 million people (one in eight of the world's population) go to bed hungry every night. Many of them are children, for whom early hunger leaves a lifelong legacy of cognitive and physical impairment.

The human and economic waste is horrifying. Such hunger is not due to a shortage of food – globally there is enough to go round and if (a big if) we make the right decisions now, we can continue to feed the world despite population growth and climate change. Ending hunger is entirely feasible (indeed, once achieved, the only question will be why it took us so long). Instead of being disgusted by poverty, we are disgusted by poor people themselves | Suzanne Moore. She is there whenever I go the shops. Every time I think she can't get any more skeletal, she manages it.

Wild eyes staring in different directions, she must have been pretty once. I try not to look, for she is often aggressive. Sometimes, though, she is in my face and asking me to go into the shop, from which she has been banned, to buy her something. A scratchcard. She feels lucky. An addict is the author of their own misfortune. Meanwhile, in the US, as this week's shocking Panorama showed, people are living in tents or underground in drains.

This contradiction is also one of the few things we in the UK are good at producing. Three years ago I was on a panel with Vince Cable at The Convention of Modern Liberty, when Cable was still reckoned a seer for predicting the recession. Our disgust at the poor is tempered only by our sentimentality about children. At what point, though, can we no longer avoid the poor, our own and the global poor? Magic mushrooms, international law and the failed 'war on drugs' | Amanda Feilding | Science. It's been a busy fortnight. First the publication of two major peer-reviewed research papers about magic mushrooms that attracted worldwide publicity. Then off to Prague for an international drugs policy symposium. And just last week, news of a large grant for our next collaborative study with Imperial College. But I'm getting ahead of myself. I established the Beckley Foundation some 14 years ago as a think tank on drugs policy.

It was apparent even then that the "war on drugs" had failed. The health statistics are equally grim. However, while it is clear that existing policies are crying out for reform, what is less clear is how to foster the required political will. The Beckley Foundation is the only organisation to combine rigorous scientific research with detailed policy analysis in an attempt to address that question. Drugs policies around the world are based on three UN conventions, dating from 1961, 1971 and 1988. During previous ages of austerity, renting out a room has been a mainstay for many families wanting extra cash. So I decided to see just how easy it was by listing my own property on Wimdu.co.uk. The only part of my house that can be easily rented out is the attic conversion, which comprises a separate bathroom and my bedroom. I spent a whole weekend cleaning and clearing out books and all the personal stuff from surfaces ready for the Wimdu photographer to take pictures. I set up a tray with a kettle, tea, coffee and hot chocolate so my guests could help themselves in the morning without having to parade through the house in their jimjams. I also decided to offer access to my kitchen too, even though the ground floor is open plan, as it seemed mean preventing guests from having access to a fridge and cooker. After looking at other rooms on the site, I set the price at £40 a night all in.

I have to admit I was nervous. But I needn't have worried. Hosts and guests review each other. Students Guide: Why not giving a fuck leads to a better life (Part 1) | | Maastricht StudentsMaastricht Students. You probably think this title is too obscene? Okay guys, I think it’s time for me to make a confession here. I spent most of my short life caring too much about offending people, worrying if I am ‘cool’ enough, or wondering if people are actually judging me. And I am certain that most of you out there have been through this as well. I could not take it anymore. It was stupid, and it was not good for my well-being. Spending time asking myself whether I was good enough made me a coward. Yes, dear wonderful readers, today the story is different. We are University students; whatever it is that we are studying we will always be surrounded by a certain society that is made up of friends, classmates, acquaintances, tutors, professors, and others.

And we have to be serious now; we have to speak the truth. Do you wonder if someone is talking shit about you? Well, let me tell you something, it is time for you to stop giving a damn. Yes, and I have the feeling that deep inside, you already know it. The Ultimate Travel Hacking Guide - StumbleUpon. David Cameron: the master of cynical propaganda | Owen Jones. When David Cameron tires of this prime minister lark (don't feel you have to take your time, Dave), he should write a self-help book for aspiring rightwing politicians. It could be titled I Got Away With It – And Here's How You Can Too. I can think of some of the promo lines: "Are you a passionate believer in free-market economics who has been lumbered with the biggest crisis of capitalism since the 1930s?

" "Are you keen to turn a crisis that looks like the death knell of all you believe in into your greatest opportunity yet? " Since Lehman Brothers went under, I've watched in awe as the right transformed a crisis of the market into a crisis of public spending. Even as a battery of cuts suck jobs and growth out of the economy, Cameron's Tories still define the political debate. Despite winning just 36% of the vote, they look increasingly like Britain's third radically transformative government since the war – the other two being the Attlee and Thatcher administrations. Limerence - Afraid of Rejection in Love - How to Get Over It? Click here to read the introduction: Is it a Big Crush or Limerence? Do you have a fear of rejection in love? Are you afraid to ask someone out? Could it be limerence? How does limerence work, and why does it make us fear rejection so much that we’d rather keep our feelings bottled up and never tell our crush that we love them?

The fear of rejection in love In limerence, the fear of rejection in love may be so great that the person may never want to approach their crush, or the limerent, because they are so worried that they may be rejected. The shyness of the person based on the fear of giving the limerent object an undesirable view can prevent a relationship from occurring even when both people are interested. People who experience limerence are so afraid that their crush may never like them back, that they actually never ever reveal their feelings, at times, even for years and decades! The effects of limerence Limerence can create a scenario that is extremely topsy-turvy. Education: Degrees that almost guarantee jobs - Education News - Education. Prospective students still agonising over their UCAS form or whether to take on the increased financial commitment of studying for a degree can get some useful advice from What Do Graduates Do 1998, out next week. Not only does the guide tell you what last year's graduates did, it also spells out which subjects lead where in an increasingly volatile employment market in which a "career for life" is a thing of the past.

The guide is written by a group of careers advisers and based on the annual graduate employment survey carried out by the Higher Education Careers Service Unit (CSU) in Manchester. And its main message is encouraging. Even though there are more graduates competing for jobs each year, employment prospects are good and improving. Vacancies advertised through the careers service rose by 31 per cent this year and employers are forecasting further increases. But the market is changing. Graduates now enter a wide range of jobs, almost irrespective of their subjects of study. How to Disagree. Truly, madly, deeply dippy - Arts & Entertainment. We're in Belturbet, 70 miles from Dublin on the border of Eire and Northern Ireland, and over the river is the converted Protestant church where Gerrard and collaborator Brendan Perry record the evocative music of Dead Can Dance: sounds that fuse times and cultures and sell by the million.

The Anglo-Irish duo met during Melbourne's post-punk explosion 15 years ago, and have been creating "sound palaces" ever since. Their instruments span a multitude of ethnic origins, from uillean pipes to Indian elephant bells, with Gerrard's dramatic vocals lending Dead Can Dance its trademark other-worldly quality. Live shows feature Gerrard - all translucent skin and Renaissance cheekbones - standing motionless, high priestess-style, behind a lectern. Fans seek them out at their homes with disciple-like zeal, leaving gifts of jewellery and paintings and, most recently, a tea- chest full of leaves inscribed with lyrics from all eight albums.

EaSTories #1. Cyber anger at Nigeria gang rape footage. 23 September 2011Last updated at 11:39 By Jonah Fisher BBC News, Lagos Nigeria's National Assembly has called on police to investigate the gang rape of a woman after footage of the incident was circulated on the internet. There has been widespread anger in Nigeria, both at the attack on the woman and what has been seen as a failure of the state authorities to take the case seriously.

The 10-minute clip shows the brutal rape of a woman in what appears to be a dormitory room. Five young men are seen laughing and joking as they take turns sexually assaulting their victim. Exhausted, she begs for mercy - at one point even asking them to kill her. The video, which the young men filmed, shows the victim's face closeup but avoids showing those of her attackers. Linda Ikeji, a blogger in Lagos, was one of the first to write about the incident and helped turn it in a national issue. The Internet has introduced a golden age of ill-informed arguments. You can't post a video of an adorable kitten without a raging debate about pet issues spawning in the comment section. These days, everyone is a pundit. But with all those different perspectives on important issues flying around, you'd think we'd be getting smarter and more informed.

Unfortunately, the very wiring of our brains ensures that all these lively debates only make us dumber and more narrow-minded. For instance ... #5. By Cyrus Sanati, contributor FORTUNE -- Booting out the weak members of the eurozone won't solve the continent's economic problems.

Such a bold move would cause more harm than good for core members of the euro, most notably, export-driven Germany. A coordinated effort to share the pain seems to be the best option out there, but it's unclear how much pain the core eurozone countries are willing to take. The integrity of the eurozone has been considered sacrosanct by its core members throughout the long running European sovereign debt crisis. But cracks in that resolve have started to form.

Traders have interpreted this to mean that a smaller eurozone may be on the horizon, one where the core members of the euro unite to form a strong fiscal and monetary union, while the peripheral nations exit the common currency and drown in debt. The Eurozone crisis will not go away until banks face reality Of course, things aren't that simple. Germany relies on the weakest members Would you blame them? „Българите са неспособни да създадат работеща държава.“ – едно интервю на холандския премиер Марк Рюте « Бъзикилийкс – Истината такава, каквато можеше да бъде!?
