There are 12 species of Prinia in India, six of which are breeding residents in the Delhi area (breeding mainly in the summer months).

The others are mostly confined to the Himalayas, the north-east and Pakistan. One exception is the reportedly widespread but rather enigmatic Jungle Prinia (Prinia sylvatica) which is rarely recorded in the northern India. Of the local species the Rufous-fronted (Prinia buchani) is restricted to low dry thorn scrub as is found on the Ridge and in the Asola area and the Grey-breasted (Prinia hodgsoni) favours the bushy understories of woodland, secondary growth and forest edge. It is common near the Polo ground and in Sanjay Van Park. The other four all favour different types of grassland or grass-scrub admixtures. Probably the most widespread of all is the Ashy (Prinia socialis) which occurs in all types of scrub with grass but will venture.
