The Hockey News: Headlines: NHL commissioner expects league to look at behavioural program after deaths. People with former Vancouver Canucks hockey player Rick Rypien's No. 37 written on their wrists gather around Felicia McKinnon while honoring Rypien outside Rogers Arena in Vancouver, B.C., on Wednesday August 17, 2011. Rypien, who signed a one-year deal with the Winnipeg Jets in July, was found dead at his Alberta home on Monday. THE CANADIAN PRESS/Darryl Dyck TORONTO - NHL commissioner Gary Bettman expects the league to review its substance abuse and behavioural health program following the death of two players over the summer.

Winnipeg Jets forward Rick Rypien and New York Rangers tough guy Derek Boogaard both spent time in the program, which is run in conjunction with the NHL Players' Association. "My guess is we'll talk at the appropriate time with the players' association, making sure that we're comfortable with all of the mechanisms and programs we have in place, which are extensive," Bettman told The Canadian Press at the league's research and development camp on Wednesday. Greed, or the owners’ willingness to ignore its inherent danger, will determine whether we see professional basketball in 2011-12. To my great surprise, the players and David Stern have done their jobs. They fixed the game.

The stench of the 2004 Palace brawl is gone. Without the traditional assistance of college basketball star-making, the league has developed and cultivated embraceable, ratings-driving superstars worthy of inheriting Michael, Magic and Larry’s thrones. Only the uninformed, willfully ignorant and biased could knock the product the NBA served this past season. Who shot LBJ? Seriously, prime-time television hadn’t delivered this kind of edge-of-your-seat drama since Kristin Shepard busted a cap in J.R. Ironically, a writers strike delayed the follow-up season of "Dallas" by two months. Whatever happens, blame the owners. I’m not in the tank for the players. Plagued by horrific off-field decisions, the Tar Heels finished just fourth in their division above Virginia and Duke.

And though beating Duke in anything is a plus for the university, Butch Davis will have eyes on his team’s production in 2011. The offense will be bringing back six of their starters from last fall and three of them come from the front five.
