Per Square Mile/Public Domain Above, find a satellite snapshot of Oakland. Below, see a similar photo of nearby, but much richer, Piedmont, California. Even from space, it's easy to tell which neighborhood is poor and which is rich. It's pretty straightforward: richer communities can afford more space for trees, and place a higher premium on growing and maintaining them. All you need to do to spot better-off neighborhoods is to look for the tree cover. Tim DeChant, who blogs over at Per Square Mile, has a pair of interesting posts up documenting this phenomenon. For every 1 percent increase in per capita income, demand for forest cover increased by 1.76 percent. In the second post, he uses satellite photos to compare poor and wealthy neighborhoods in 6 different cities.

This is thoroughly unscientific, of course, but the effect is pretty stunning. And It all makes a pretty powerful argument in favor of tree-planting initiatives in lower income neighborhoods. These 100-Year-Old Aerial Photos Were Taken by Pigeons. Wikimedia Commons/CC BY 2.0 Although pigeons nowadays are largely regarded as grubby urban pests, bumblers for bread crumbs, and unwelcome statuary redecorators -- in the not-too-distant past, their service to mankind was much loftier indeed. Not only were these hardy birds used to swiftly carry important messages and materials across great distances, for a brief stint at the turn of the last century, an elite group of camera-wielding pigeons also became early pioneers of a then burgeoning field: aerial photography.

Wikimedia Commons/CC BY 2.0 In 1903, a German pharmacist named Julius Neubronner started employing carrier pigeons to receive and fulfill emergency prescriptions from a hospital in the region. One day, after a bird of his mysteriously returned after being lost a month late, Julius began to devise a way to track their flights. "This is not pornography!" say nude online protesters. “Listen, Chinese Government, Nudity is Not Pornography!” Under this rallying cry, dozens of Chinese Internet users have posted naked photos of themselves online. The daring move came after the Beijing authorities opened an inquiry last Friday into whether photographs taken by one of artist Ai Weiwei’s assistants are “pornographic”. Online protesters immediately launched their nude self-portrait campaign to condemn this move, which they see as yet another attack on Ai Weiwei, the artist who rose to international notoriety for speaking out on human rights violations in China.

In the photo, taken a year ago, Ai Weiwei is seen posing nude with four women. Titled “One tiger, eight breasts”, the photo went unnoticed by Chinese authorities until last Thursday, when the photographer was questioned by the police. They accused him of having published “obscene” material on the Internet. Conservation Photographer Offers 4 Photography Tips. B1YK2.
