In summary, the report says the great sense of euphoria and calm that many people report experiencing after prolonged exercise ("the runner's high") is not so much governed by the endorphins as "now an emerging field of neuroscience indicates that an altogether different neurochemical system within the body and brain, the endocannabinoid system, may be responsible for that feeling" of "pure happiness, elation, a feeling of unity with one's self and/or nature, endless peacefulness," and "inner harmony.

" I have always been fascinated by how exercise and positive mood states go together. Having a master's degree in exercise physiology and cardiac rehabilitation, being a runner for 45 years, and as a rock climber with a background in Zen, I feel qualified to discuss how the endocannabinoid system can be activated by exercise and/or THC ingestion. The whole system is controlled by four players -- two bliss receptors and two bliss molecules. Why I am using the term "bliss receptor"? Missoni for Target collection crashes store website - GlobalPost. Please support our site by enabling javascript to view ads. Target's Missoni collection went on sale Tuesday, but many shoppers were shut out by massive demand for the Italian designer's capsule collection for the American clothing retailer. Target's website crashed for several hours, and long lines at the retailer's stores meant that items from Missoni's 400-piece fashion line were soon unavailable, CBS News says.

"This was Missoni mayhem," Joshua Thomas, a Target spokesman, told CBS. More fashion news from GlobalPost: Fashion brightens downtown Johannesburg Missoni is known for its luxury knitwear in bright zigzag patterns, and its Target collection — priced at a fraction of the usual cost — has sparked widespread interest, The New York Times says.

(Clarification/update: Some have read this post and missed the fact that it is a joke. It is, indeed, a joke.) Michelle Legro in Lapham's Quarterly on the culinary-themed writings, sketches, and opinions of Leonardo da Vinci, who was known as "fat boy" when he was a pastry-snarfing 17-year-old kitchen apprentice. Five hundred years before Modernist Cuisine’s exhaustive look at molecular gastronomy, The Kitchen Notebooks of Leonardo da Vinci envisioned a culinary world as studio and laboratory, where food was to be prepared efficiently, beautifully, and ingeniously. Unfortunately, Italian food of the late fifteenth century had less to do with the luxurious feats of Ancient Rome and more to do with the rustic tastes of the Goths, whose dishes included meats and birds for those who could afford it, and an endless parade of porridge and gruel for those who could not.

And from da Vinci's writings on table etiquette, it sounds like people back then were real slobs: You can buy the book here. Stephenie Meyer fans in New York. Photograph: Brad Barket/Getty Images Burying your head in a novel isn't just a way to escape the world: psychologists are increasingly finding that reading can affect our personalities. A trip into the world of Stephenie Meyer, for example, actually makes us feel like vampires. Researchers from the University at Buffalo gave 140 undergraduates passages from either Meyer's Twilight or JK Rowling's Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone to read, with the vampire group delving into an extract in which Edward Cullen tells his teenage love interest Bella what it is like to be a vampire, and the wizardly readers getting a section in which Harry and his cohorts are "sorted" into Hogwarts houses.

Published by the journal Psychological Science, the study found that participants who read the Harry Potter chapters self-identified as wizards, whereas participants who read the Twilight chapter self-identified as vampires. The Idea in Brief Executives, like most other people, have long believed that human beings are interested only in advancing their material interests.

However, recent research in evolutionary biology, psychology, sociology, political science, and experimental economics suggests that people behave far less selfishly than most assume. Evolutionary biologists and psychologists have even found neural and, possibly, genetic evidence of a human predisposition to cooperate. These findings suggest that instead of using controls or carrots and sticks to motivate people, companies should use systems that rely on engagement and a sense of common purpose. Several levers can help executives build cooperative systems: encouraging communication, ensuring authentic framing, fostering empathy and solidarity, guaranteeing fairness and morality, using rewards and punishments that appeal to intrinsic motivations, relying on reputation and reciprocity, and ensuring flexibility.

Anyone with a driving licence will be able to pick up one of the four-seater electric "Bluecars" for short journeys around the city, dropping it off at any battery point. The Autolib service follows the French capital's success with Velib, the self-service bike scheme that has been copied by London.

Sixty Years of Germany's Beate Uhse: When Sexual Liberation Arrived By Mail - SPIEGEL ONLINE - News - International. The young woman with wavy, short hair casts a worried glance into the camera. Her look reveals a mix of doubt, pensiveness and innocence. Beneath her full lips and oval face is the five-word sentence meant to sweep over postwar Germany like a thunderclap. "Is everything alright with our marriage? " the caption asked in curvy schoolgirl handwriting. And, of course, the honest answer was 'no'. In the 1950s, many German couples' bedrooms were ruled by shame, uncertainty and prudishness.

It was exactly this situation that triggered the release of Beate Uhse's first catalogue in 1952 -- the one with the worried girl on the cover. The catalogue is just one of the items in the archive neatly assembled by Beate Uhse herself, the grande dame of the German erotica industry, about the early days of her company. Today, her archive is stored in thick, gray binders in the basement of the Research Centre for Contemporary History in Hamburg (FZH). 'Love without Fear' Condoms in the Nursery Dresser. #MMOT. By Ed Masley - Sept. 20, 2011 03:03 PMThe Arizona Republic The stage was set for an impromptu public debate on Arizona's immigration policies when Sheriff Joe Arpaio stepped out for a sandwich Tuesday afternoon, Sept. 20, and found a press conference assembled just outside his office to call attention to Manu Chao's appearance at Festival de Resistencia.

The free concert, beginning at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 21, on the corner of West Second Avenue and West Grant Street in Phoenix, is being held in "celebration of the fight for civil rights, human rights, indigenous rights and the rights of Mother Earth. " Arpaio seemed willing and eager to talk, but the French musician was surrounded by reporters and photographers in front of Wells Fargo Bank. Asked why he didn't take advantage of the opportunity to engage with Arpaio, Chao said, "I'm sorry if he want to talk with me. "So I'm really happy with that," he says. "But I also see that the situation is very cruel for a lot of people.

Advice for Ugly Americans on How to Get Your Pint Re-Filled, UK-style. In the brilliant film Syriana, George Clooney’s character, a spy, tells an Arab that he is Canadian, not American. This technique is often recommended to Americans travelling in Middle East hot spots, as a way of lowering the likelihood of verbal or physical aggression. I have been to Iraq, Turkey, Egypt and Jordan and was physically assaulted in one of them and verbally threatened in another, but have never resorted to the “Canadian lie”. Until the night before last that is, when I felt the need to use it in London.

Bare-breasted statue uncovered two centuries after Christians hid her body | Art and design.

The statue – with added breastplate (left) and as the sculptor intended her. Photograph: Phil Yeomans/BNPS A statue of a bare-breasted woman whose torso was discreetly covered for centuries has been found in a Bristol church house where John Wesley worshipped. There is speculation that the half-clad figure was considered too much of a distraction for Wesley, the founder of Methodism, and his followers.

The figure, holding a cornucopia of fruit, is suspected to be Abundantia – a Roman personification of abundance and prosperity. The statue is thought to have arrived in the UK from Europe and to have been placed in the house soon after it was built in the 17th century. In the 18th century theologian Wesley (1703-91) held prayer meetings in the building before his move to a purpose-built place of worship – the New Room.

The statue was found above a fireplace during a lottery-funded restoration of the 12th-century Priory Church of St James and the church house. Petersburg Man hopes to save people from indifference. BBC Nature - Protoceratops Dinosaur found with its own tracks. 14 September 2011Last updated at 00:45 By Victoria Gill Science reporter, BBC Nature The footprint is preserved in the rock matrix encasing the 80-million-year-old fossil A fossil housed for half a century in a Polish museum has turned out to be the first dinosaur skeleton preserved in its own tracks, say scientists. A recent examination of the 80-million-year-old specimen revealed a single footprint preserved in the rocks encasing the fossilised bones.

Polish and Mongolian fossil hunters first unearthed it in 1965 in Mongolia. Scientists now report the results of its re-examination in the journal Cretaceous Research. The dinosaur is a Protoceratops, and since this is one of the most common dinosaurs found in the rich fossil beds of the Gobi Desert, it was not deemed to be very significant. Polish palaeontologists Grzegorz Niedzwiedzki and Tomasz Singer spotted the footprint while they were preparing the fossil for display at the Polish Academy of Sciences in Warsaw.
