For his book "Creative Code", John Maeda sent interview questions to a number of computational artists and designers. Below are my own responses to his questions. The final article included in Maeda's book is a small excerpt from my responses. Golan Levin, August 2003.
Art after DNA The double helix has inspired scientists and artists alike. No sooner had James Watson and Francis Crick published their seminal paper on DNA in 1953 than artists began depicting the double helix as a cultural icon. Salvador Dalí painted swarms of spiralling DNA molecules in his paintings from the late 1950s, such as Butterfly Landscape ( The Great Masturbator in a Surrealist Landscape with DNA , 1957–58), and decades later sculptor Tom Otterness forged a bronze double helix joined by tiny stick figures ( DNA Chain , 1986).

Ben Fry | COMPUTATIONAL INFORMATION DESIGN The ability to collect, store, and manage data is increasing quickly, but our ability to understand it remains constant. In an attempt to gain better understanding of data, fields such as information visualization, data mining and graphic design are employed, each solving an isolated part of the specific problem, but failing in a broader sense: there are too many unsolved problems in the visualization of complex data. As a solution, this dissertation proposes that the individual fields be brought together as part of a singular process titled Computational Information Design. Teletext: first in a series of ads will focus on Teletext Holidays Teletext today launched a £6m advertising campaign as part of the onscreen information group's attempt to modernise the brand. The national television campaign aims to promote Teletext's new digital TV services, with the first in a series of ads focusing on Teletext Holidays. The animated ad, which will run across ITV's four channels and Channel 4 until April 30, shows a spiraling whirlwind of text coming together to create different holiday scenes and was created by agency Clemmow Hornby Inge.
The Scanner Photography Project
Pictures of cars, busses, and so on, taken with the scanner camera. A shot from a series I did of an Audi TT, driving slowly back and forth in front of the Queen's Arms in London. I especially like the way that the reflections on the hood are warped from the 'virtual surface' created by the scanner distortion. Camera: Horseman 450L Scanner Camera.
