http://tmema.org/mis/ Zachary Lieberman ( http://www.thesystemis.com ) is an artist, engineer and educator whose work explores the creative and human uses of technology. He produces installations, on-line works and concerts concerned with the themes of kinetic and gestural performance, interactive imaging and sound synthesis. Lieberman lives and works in New York City, where he teaches courses in audiovisual synthesis and creative image processing at Parsons School of Design. Most recently, Lieberman and Levin have premiered several works exploring visual treatments of real-time speech analysis, including RE:MARK (2002), an interactive installation, and Messa di Voce (2003), an interactive-media performance. Golan Levin ( http://www.flong.com ) is an artist, engineer and composer interested in developing artifacts and events which explore supple new modes of interactive expression. Essay for Creative Code, edited by John Maeda - Golan Levin and It is straightforward to imagine how each of these practices would have analogies in the realm of visual art made on the computer. To the traditional formal elements of visual design (which Jacques Bertin calls ocular variables ), the computer adds the additional elements of temporality (through iteration), and contingency (through conditional testing). And so, it becomes possible for abstract computational art-systems to address, as their subject matter, dynamism (the way things change over time), interactivity (the character of the feedback loop established with a user), and processuality (the character of algorithmic processes). http://www.flong.com/texts/essays/essay_creative_code/

http://benfry.com/phd/ computational information design | ben fry Download PDF (16.1 MB) The ability to collect, store, and manage data is increasing quickly, but our ability to understand it remains constant. In an attempt to gain better understanding of data, fields such as information visualization, data mining and graphic design are employed, each solving an isolated part of the specific problem, but failing in a broader sense: there are too many unsolved problems in the visualization of complex data. As a solution, this dissertation proposes that the individual fields be brought together as part of a singular process titled Computational Information Design. This page primarily covers the original version of Valence (first developed in early 1999), which was developed as part of my Master's Thesis titled Organic Information Design . The thesis has more in-depth information about the project and its methods than what's descibed here. valence | ben fry
