State of Minnesota bans free online education

Web-based education startup Coursera offers university-level courses "for anyone to take, for free" – anyone, that is, except residents of the US state of Minnesota, where free online education has been declared illegal. The Chronicle of Higher Education reports that the Minnesota Office of Higher Education has told Coursera that it must not offer its free courses in the Land of 10,000 Lakes because it has not received authorization from the state government to do so. "This has been a longtime requirement in Minnesota (at least 20 years)," Tricia Grimes, a policy analyst for the Minnesota Office of Higher Education told The Chronicle , "and applies to online and brick-and-mortar postsecondary institutions that offer instruction to Minnesota residents as part of our overall responsibility to provide consumer protection for students." Not that Coursera qualifies as a "postsecondary institution," as such.

Siri's Next Iteration will Teach Programming to Kids - Gamification Co

Frank Meehan, founder of Kuato Studios , is designing an iPad game to teach programming for kids that will feature Siri’s voice recognition software and it’s starting to look quite impressive. For starters, he has recruited a team of developers from companies like Rockstar (Grand Theft Auto) and Konami (Metal Gear) to produce a third-person shooter akin to Mass Effect . The cool part? Siri will be an in-game assistant to help players through programming puzzles. http://www.gamification.co/2012/08/06/siri-teaches-programming/

Epic’s third E-learning Debate ended in a defeat for the motion ‘This house believes that technology-based informal learning is more style than substance’. An article covering the results of the debate has made it into eLearn Magazine. Despite some strong arguments that informal learning lacks rigour, only 33% of participants at elearningdebate.com voted for style over substance. Just as in the live event hosted last October at the Oxford Union, there was clearly a strong belief that informal learning has an important role to play in training and education. And technology is heightening its impact.
