Magazine | TED: Ideas Worth Spreading Imagine sitting in an audience of one thousand people, a large majority of which have names such as Peter Gabriel, Bill Clinton, or Bono. A simple stage with a screen and some Macs awaits the next 18-minute speech from the likes of Al Gore (who did not actually invent the internet) or Larry Page from Google (who actually did reinvent it.) At the end of a long day of speeches, you wander the halls discussing things like poverty in Africa with attendees such as famed linguist Steven Pinker, one of the members of Pilobolus, or maybe Cameron Diaz. The conference circuit can be a dull, lifeless landscape. Yet one conference continues to shine a powerful light into this wilderness. Ideas Worth Spreading: TED Created in 1984 by Richard Saul Wurman and Harry Marks, the conference had a slow start and didn’t become annual until 1990. “A mind once stretched by a new idea never regains its original dimension.”Oliver Wendel Holmes, Jr. D. TED (Technology, Entertainment, Design) is a global set of conferences owned by the private non-profit Sapling Foundation, under the slogan "ideas worth spreading". TED was founded in 1984 as a one-off event.[1] The annual conference began in 1990, in Monterey, California.[4] TED's early emphasis was technology and design, consistent with its origins in the Silicon Valley. Since June 2006,[1] the talks have been offered for free viewing online, under Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivs Creative Commons license, through TED.com.[8] As of April 2014, over 1,700 talks are available free online.[9] By January 2009 they had been viewed 50 million times. In June 2011, the viewing figure stood at more than 500 million,[10] and on Tuesday, November 13, 2012, TED Talks had been watched one billion times worldwide.[11] TED's mission statement begins: We believe passionately in the power of ideas to change attitudes, lives and ultimately, the world. The TED Prize was introduced in 2005. TED (conference) TED (conference)
Richard Saul Wurman Richard Saul Wurman Career[edit] Wurman chaired the IDCA Conference in 1972, the First Federal Design assembly in 1973, and the annual AIA Conference in 1976. He is perhaps best known for having cofounded and chaired the TED conference from 1984 thru 2002, bringing together various thinkers in the fields of Technology, Entertainment and Design. He also created the TEDMED conference (1995-2010) and the e.g. conference in 2006. In 1976, Wurman coined the phrase "information architect" in response to the large amount of information generated in contemporary society, which is often presented with little care or order. Wurman said, "I thought the explosion of data needed an architecture, needed a series of systems, needed systemic design, a series of performance criteria to measure it In 1978, he served as the Dean for the Cal Poly Pomona College of Environmental Design.[2] Wurman was made an AIA Fellow in 1976 and entered the Art Directors Club Hall of Fame in 2003. New TED Book: Brain Power New TED Book: Brain Power While many wonder what the pervasive use of technology is doing to our overloaded mental circuits, the new TED Book Brain Power: From Neurons to Networks ponders that question in another way: can cutting-edge neurological research into child brain development teach us anything about how we shape the global “brain” of the Internet? As author Tiffany Shlain explains today in an essay on the Huffington Post, “The Internet, like the developing brain of a child, is in a rapid phase of growth and change. This means that just as we must be mindful in how we nurture our children’s minds, we must also pay careful attention to how we develop our global brain.” This ebook was created in conjunction with a 10-minute film by Shlain, below, which uses an innovative, participatory filmmaking process called “Cloud Filmmaking.” Brain Power is available for the Kindle and Nook, as well as through the iBookstore.
