Learning through life – A study of older people with literacy difficulties in Ireland A new report (Dec. 2009) from the Irish National Adult Literacy Agency on literacy needs in the older population includes the recommendation: "Service providers should continue to develop and promote adult and community education models for learning which do not evoke memories of the formal education system for older people. Several other recommendations refer to the principles of embedding literacy in everyday learning. Literacy There is no universal definition of literacy. It can be defined as simply as "the ability to read and write" or more broadly as "a complex web of reading, writing, speaking, listening, problem solving, creative thinking and numeracy skills." For the purposes of ReAL when we talk about literacy we mean reading and writing and, in particular, how learners use and understand written texts. Numeracy Numeracy can be defined as "the combination of mathematical knowledge, problem solving and communication skills necessary for a person to function successfully in society" (Adapted from: Numeracy for Secondary Students, 1998, British Columbia Association of Mathematics Teachers) It relates to a person's ability to apply their maths knowledge and skills in a variety of situations. ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) is a term commonly used to describe learners who are still in the process of acquiring English as a second or additional language. Many children are growing up with apps and digital media as part of their lives, alongside reading, physical play, television and other forms of entertainment and learning. Plenty of companies, from the biggest children’s brands to brand new technology startups, are exploring the potential of tablets and apps for kids, so what do they have in store for 2015? Here are some of the key trends for parents to look out for. 1. It’s no surprise that the first few waves of children’s apps – at least the ones telling stories – took their cues heavily from books, complete with digital pages to turn. How can text, animation and touchscreen interactivity blend together in new and engaging ways? Existing examples: the genre-blurring fun in Jack and the Beanstalk by Nosy Crow or Dino Dog – A Digging Adventure. 2. It sounds like a blitheringly obvious statement – of course children tell stories. 3. 4. 5. 6. As a teacher, you know that if a student doesn't understand a skill, they still will not know that skill, if students are placed on the computer to practice it. How Teachers Can Become Fluent in Classroom Technology How Teachers Can Become Fluent in Classroom Technology During one of our last leadership team meetings this past school year, we reflected on our use of digital portfolios to house student work. We had a lot to celebrate: We had found a digital tool to capture student learning, Evernote, a cloud-based note-taking app. No one felt much pressure to be the best at using technology. Parent feedback, although limited in the initial stages of this project, was very positive. Things were looking up going into the fall. But a variety of concerns were also shared. Although there might never be enough time, what could be an underlying concern here? A theory was that technology had not truly become embedded in the day-to-day instruction of some teachers because they had not developed fluency in using it. We had not yet achieved a sense of comfort with the digital devices we had on hand. Personally Connect With Technology Certainly, I am not advocating that educators treat school technology like their own personal property. Starting Small

(Image via Dr. Ruben Puentedura via hippasus.com) When I saw Dr. 1. 2. If you’re where I was when I asked question 1 above, here’s your brief synopsis: SAMR is a technology integration model that basically shows the way to get the most out of your technology in the classroom. Redefinition is at the top of the SAMR model, but that doesn’t mean that you “win” or that you’re doing it right only if you reach redefinition. But redefinition is the Holy Grail. At a recent conference, I was asked for some redefinition examples, and I realized that that’s what we’re all really looking for: ideas we can modify so we can get there too. Here are 10 ideas for reaching SAMR’s redefinition level: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. eBook authors: Creating an eBook opens students’ work up to a global audience. 6. 7. 8. 9. 10.
