While a great hairstyle can lift years off your look and make you feel completely reinvigorated, few realize that it’s your face shape that is truly at play. As the foundation for any haircut, the shape of your face determines how your hair will emphasize your eyes, lips and cheekbones. QUIZ: What's Your Face Shape? “With a great haircut and layering technique that is finely tuned to your face shape, you can truly make the best of yourself, and instantly bring more life and vitality to your features,” says Guido, YouBeauty Hair Advisor. First, you’ll want to determine what face shape you have naturally. The texture of your hair—whether straight/wavy, curly or highly texturized—is another essential part of determining how your final cut will look. Basing a cut on your face shape and hair texture can make you look your best, and translate into saving you some serious styling time in the morning. “Don’t fight the reality of the way you live. Hair Problems and Solutions PROBLEM: Hair Damage. Many people damage their hair in the maintenance and styling process, even without knowing.SOLUTION: Look out for these major hair damage culprits, and follow our advice. Excessive combing: Over time, too much brushing (especially on wet hair) can cause the delicate cuticle scales on the outside of the hair shaft to lift and peel off. The wrong tools: The wrong comb can remove the cuticle layer in large portions, making porous and dull hair strands. Try a wide-tooth comb and go from ends to roots. Back-combing and teasing: This tugs hair in the opposite direction of the cuticle scales, which can eventually rip them off and leave the inner cortex exposed. Heated appliances: When too hot or used on wet hair, heat styling can cause hair to boil! QUIZ: Do You Have Healthy Hair? PROBLEM: Split Ends. They occur when the cuticle layer is severely weathered or missing. PROBLEM: Lackluster Locks. PROBLEM: Oily Hair. PROBLEM: Faded Hair Color. Healthy, straight hair is like the perky, popular girl in high school—polished, shiny, effortlessly pretty and annoyingly enviable. Some hairstylists say that straight hair is the easiest hair type to manage. Natural characteristics: Healthy straight hair is known for its mirror-like shine. That’s because straight surfaces reflect more light. Although straight hair is believed to be less prone to spontaneous knotting, research shows that the opposite may be true. The nitty gritty: Scientists don’t know why different hair types develop, but the shape of the hair follicle matters (yours is straight), as does the way hair proteins (keratin) are clustered in the hair shaft. Hair challenges: Lack of volume is a common lament of straight-haired gals, notes celebrity hair stylist Kristan Serafino. Challenge accepted: Volumizing hair products give lifeless hair a much-needed lift, but slathering them on will only weigh your hair down. Science of Straight Hair Science of Straight Hair

Long Hair Tips Long Hair Tips Many of you asked if I could do a post on my hair care and routine. Apologies that it has taken me so long to post on it. I have to admit that my hair really is not in its most healthy state right now. I decided to break this down into areas. In any case, I do not do nearly all the things I know, I should be doing for my hair. On My Hair Type I have a lot of hair. Washing I wash my hair at most three times a week, typically only twice. Once about every 6 weeks I use a clarifying shampoo to remove any product build up that with time can really weigh hair down, dulling it and making it more difficult to style. Conditioning Opposite from shampooing, I do not condition my roots very much. Once a month I will try and condition my hair for about 30 minutes, but as any mama, finding the time to shower is hard enough. However, I do completely recommend to deep condition at least twice a month, use a hair mask, or hot oil. From Wet to SetWhen I was younger, I loved wrapping my hair in a towel.

Hair Tutorial: The Perfect Mermaid Curls Although “perfect” is a relative term, this method for curling hair is pretty much perfect by my standards, mostly because it isn’t fussy. While I’m a sucker for both ringlets and Californian waves, I like my own curls somewhere in between: relaxed but bouncy. Mermaid-like. Supplies: 1″ curling iron, brush, and hair sprayTime: 45 minutes (for thick hair) All of the magic happens with Revlon’s “Helen of Troy” ceramic 1″ curling iron. For hairspray, I’m a fan of Tigi’s Hard Head, which has a strong hold without the severe crunchiness. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. Repeat this around your entire head. Don’t get lazy with the back of your head! Et voilà! Keywords: wavy hair tutorial, curly hair tutorial, curling iron tutorial
Homemade Hair Treatments - At Home DIY Hair Treatments - Womans Day Eggs, yogurt and honey are, at first glance, all components of a tasty breakfast—but they also happen to be hair treatment ingredients, and affordable, all-natural ones at that. And they're not the only ones. Did you know, for instance, that the oils in avocados more closely resemble our own skin's oils than any product in the beauty aisle does? For All Hair Types "The [raw] egg is really the best of all worlds," says Janice Cox, author of Natural Beauty at Home. To Use: For normal hair, use the entire egg to condition hair; use egg whites only to treat oily hair; use egg yolks only to moisturize dry, brittle hair, Cox says. Photo by Shutterstock. For Dull Hair Styling products (as well as air pollution) can leave a film that both saps moisture and dulls shine—but dairy products like sour cream and plain yogurt can help reverse this damage. To Use: Massage 1/2 cup sour cream or plain yogurt into damp hair and let sit for 20 minutes. For Itchy Scalp For Limp or Fine Hair For Frizzy Hair
Homemade Moisturizing Hair Masks If your hair is in need of a little tender loving care, skip the expensive spa treatments and commercial products filled with artificial chemicals and additives. Instead, mix up an eco-chic, moisturizing hair mask made from wholesome, natural ingredients found in your own kitchen. Not only will these do-it-yourself pampering treatments give you the biggest bang for your beauty bucks, but you'll also save yourself time styling once your locks are smooth, soft and manageable. Crack 1 egg into a mixing bowl and whisk the egg until it's foamy. Add 1 large ripe banana and 1 small ripe avocado. Stir in 3 tbsp. sweet almond oil or olive oil, along with 3 tbsp. cream or buttermilk. Apply the moisturizing mask to your hair, working the mixture from your scalp to the ends of your hair. Rinse the mask from your hair with warm water, then shampoo with your favorite moisturizing shampoo. Place 1/2 cup of honey in a small, microwave-safe mixing bowl. Pour in 3 tbsp. extra virgin olive oil.

Dry Hair Treatment With Canola Oil Styling products, chemical treatments and the sun's rays can leave your hair feeling dry and brittle. Instead of addressing the damage with a store-bought conditioner, give your mane a drink of canola oil. Like other types of oil, canola oil moisturizes and softens hair naturally. A drizzle of canola oil is all you need to infuse your hair with moisture. Massage a small amount of the oil into your hair and then cover your hair with a towel or plastic shower cap. Canola oil blends well with other ingredients to make a hydrating hair mask.
