The A-Z List of Free Sans Serif Fonts for Commercial Design
There are a few things I’ve been meaning to do over the last couple of months since purchasing my iMac: Find, Download and Install Sans Serif, Serif and Calligraphy fonts, and make a decent post or two for Circlebox whilst searching. I’ve finally got around to collecting some Sans Serif fonts, so here are just some of the fonts I installed in a nice ‘A-Z List’. If this post does well, I’d like to make an A-Z list for Serif and Calligraphic fonts, too – so let me know if you like it in the comments section at the bottom of this post! You can download all the fonts for free from the ever popular dafont.com by clicking on the fonts name. What’s your favourite font here? Mac 101: Font Book
Using Font Book Font Book is located in the Applications folder (in the Finder, choose Go > Applications). To manage or view fonts, open Font Book, or double-click a font file. In Font Book, the Collection column on the left shows installed fonts by category; click a different category to see different kinds of fonts, or click "All Fonts" for a list of all installed fonts. The Font column in the middle displays all fonts within the selected collection. These are some other things you can do with Font Book: To preview a new font that you downloaded or have on a disc, double-click the font file. If you want to install the font so that it can be used in documents you create or view, click the "Install Font" button that appears below the preview of the font. You can also use Font Book to install one or more fonts. When Font Book installs a font, it will automatically validate the font and let you know if it detects any issue with the font file. Undoing Font Book
Using the procedures specified in this FAQ, you can "undo" almost everything done by using Font Book except: Restoring fonts you have Removed. Putting fonts you moved back where they belong. This FAQ addresses: Additional advice on fonts and Font Book can be found in the "Fonts" and "Font Book" chapters, respectively, of our book, Troubleshooting Mac® OS X. Avoiding problems with Font Book Most problems related to Font Book arise from: Misunderstanding its default preferences. Accordingly, we recommend the following: Thoroughly familiarize yourself with Font Book before using it: Understand Font Book preferences. Undoing Font Book in Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard If you are the only user of your Mac, restarting in Safe Mode will clear your font cache, thereby resetting disabled fonts in Font Book. If you want to reset Font Book for a single user: How disabled fonts are handled in Font Book 2.2 under Snow Leopard Snow Leopard includes Font Book 2.2, again changing how disabled fonts are handled:
As you use various fonts in OS X, the system caches font data, to make future access faster. However, there’s also the possibility that those caches may get corrupted, which can cause all sorts of interesting problems. One common symptom of corrupted font caches is seeing strange and overlapping characters in whatever application happens to be accessing the font with a corrupted cache. Prior to OS X 10.5, all font caches resided in the top-level Library -> Caches folder, in a file named com.apple.ATS. Thankfully, there’s a relatively easy way around this problem—the atsutil command-line program. atsutil lets you easily clear the font cache for one (or all) users on the system, and stop and restart the Apple Type Services server, which (should) do the same thing as logging out and logging in after deleting a cache file in pre-10.5 systems. atsutil databases -removeUser If you want to remove the font cache for all users, use this command, and provide your admin password when asked:

Preview ALL Your Fonts At The Same Time
Whenever I’m working on a project that uses text, I feel like I spend most of my time deciding on the fonts I want to use. Whether I’m working in Photoshop or in Silhouette Studio, most of my designing time is spent running through my font list….and it takes forever! It’s just down-arrowing after down-arrowing, followed by settling on a font, only to second guess myself then having to run through all the fonts AGAIN. Well, recently I was introduced to an awesome website that lets you preview ALL of the fonts that are installed on your computer AT THE SAME TIME! Check out this site to preview all your fonts! This amazing and super easy-to-use website is wordmark.it. [Now, this site is pretty straight-forward and doesn’t really need a tutorial….but, just in case, here’s a run-down on how to use all of its features.] How to Use wordmark.it The site couldn’t be easier to use either. Tada! After your fonts have been loaded, each is displayed in a little box with the font’s name underneath.

How to turn your icons into a web font
I had created some neat icons for a website redesign I was doing, and I previewed the new site on an old iPad. The layout looked OK at normal size, but zooming in to part of the page, I suddenly saw that my icon was a blurry mess, while the text-based header was still crisp and sharp. On a newer Retina-display iPad, the icons didn’t look quite sharp, even at normal size. The first idea I had was to create double-sized sprite images, setting them to display at half their size using CSS. While this made them look better on a Retina display at normal size, as soon as you started to pinch and zoom, the blurriness returned. But the text was still as crisp and pin-sharp. The answer was obvious. In this tutorial, we’ll look at how to turn vector icons into a web font using a great free web app called IcoMoon. The advantages of using an icon font An icon font has several advantages over bitmap images, in addition to image sharpness. So, let’s get started! Creating an icon font Step by step 1. 2. 3.
Madras free font | Fontfabric™
Madras is a sans-serif type family consisting of 7 weights plus matching italics, designed by Thomas Gillett (Australia). The design and production spanned over 2 years beginning with Thomas’s Andromeda typeface and drawing inspiration from street and roadside signage. The typeface has been designed to be space-efficient, legible and ultimately elegant. Madras features the simplicity of typefaces such as Helvetica and is combined with modern defining features of typefaces such as Interstate to create a hybrid typeface that can be applied to any situation. The name Madras was chosen from a competition we ran on our Twitter.
