It is time for Universal Design for Learning to be put in the hands of every student. It is time for every student to be given the opportunity to discover and experiment with a range of tools which can support their own individual differing communication needs – not just in school, but throughout their lives. Schools, traditionally, have provided students one way to do things. If the class was supposed to read something, everyone had the same technology – paper with alphabetical symbols printed on it which students needed to “decode.” If the class was supposed to write, everyone had the same technology – usually a pencil or a pen used to create alphabetical symbols on paper.

If students could not function well with that “one way” they either failed, or were diagnosed as being “disabled” and were prescribed a different “one way” to work – a way which would set them apart from their peers forever. Often times when I go into a classroom to work with students and iPads I connect my iPad to whatever projection system exists in the room. I’m pretty comfortable unplugging cables from computers, but not everyone is. Recently I set up a bunch of schools with a one-touch solution to switch their SMARTboard or projector between their computer and their iPad. What You Need VGA Switch: a) I like the 2-source VGA switch from StarTech, available on Amazon (purchasing through this link supports this website) b) Here is a cheaper option, but I haven’t used it Please note you only need one of these, not both!

Apple VGA Connector I always just buy this from Apple. VGA Cables a) 25′ Cable w/ Audio will give you lots of room to stretch and you can also connect the audio to your iPad(purchasing through these links supports this website) b) 5′ VGA Cable How To Set It Up 1) Unplug the VGA cable from the back of your computer that goes into your projector/SMARTboard. 1 easy way to turn those old school netbooks & laptops into Google Chromebooks! For the price of a 4GB memory stick you can turn most old netbooks and laptops into a Google Chromebook! That’s all it takes to download Vanilla a portable Google Chrome operating system called Chromium OS. Most schools I know have many old laptops and netbooks that are not used because they are too slow or clogged up with old programs.

This fantastic program will revitalise that old hardware and upcycle them into Google Chromebooks. What’s a Chromebook? Simply put, a Chromebook is a mobile computer that features the Google web browser. The great thing about Chromebooks is that children (especially younger ones) don’t get access to other programs or files that are stored on the computer and therefore cannot delete or change anything important. Also if your school has ‘Google Apps for Education’ then this is a very easy way to establish Google Apps as a learning tool with your pupils and staff. So how about an even more amazing cost-saving idea for school?
