What is Being Jewish? Unlike some other religions, Judaism is not learned in one day. There was a man who wanted to learn all of Judaism in one minute. He went to Hillel the Elder (circa 100 B.C.E.) and asked to be taught all the Torah in the short time that he could stand on one leg. Hillel the Elder told him, in what is today the most often misquoted passage of the Talmud, "What you do not like, do not do to your friend. The rest explains it, go and complete it entirely. "1 There are many ways of understanding this. The Talmud teaches that a person should always, at every moment, consider himself at the very center of a balanced scale. So, everything could very well depend on the very action you do right now. What are these good deeds? Spirituality and holiness are necessary for the continued existence of the universe. So what is the nature of our responsibilities? Education & Resources - National Women's History Museum - NWHM.

A pioneer of women’s history, Gerda Lerner has helped to shape this field of study through narrative, theory, and activism for over 40 years.

In the 20th century, Lerner played a central role in the establishment of women’s history as a formal academic field. Quoted by President Carter in his proclamation of the first National Women’s History Week, Lerner proclaimed, “Women’s history is women’s right—an essential, indispensable heritage from which we can draw pride, comfort, courage, and long range vision.” Born in 1920 to a Jewish family in Vienna, Austria, Gerda Kronstein was a young girl when Adolph Hitler began his rise to power. In protest of Hitler’s efforts to eradicate Europe’s Jewish population, a courageous teenage Kronstein joined the underground resistance to the Nazi occupation. However, she and her family were caught and forced into exile in 1938. During the McCarthy period, Carl was blacklisted and unable to find work in California. Additional Resources: Websites: Books:

Standing Together Bar/Bat Mitzvah Program with IDF Soldiers

This is the age at which children are seen to come of age, to be old enough to be counted upon as a responsible, contributing member of society. It is not surprising that many Bnei Mitzvah choose to mark this important transition with a special charity project. Standing Together, is run mostly by volunteers and is dedicated to showing the people who protect Israel, its soldiers, our appreciation for their hard work. With the Standing Together truck and “hospitality trailer” volunteers visit IDF soldiers at their bases and offer support, gratitude, hot and cold drinks, warm winter wear and many other treats. Standing Together can offer you a unique and exciting opportunity for your Bar/ Bat Mitzva project which combines two important Mitzvot of Gmilut Chassadim (loving kindness for others) and Hakarat Hatov (expression of gratitude).

Eshet Chayil

" The phrase comes from Proverbs 31:10, where it introduces a paean to her manifold virtues. "Who can find her," the author asks rhetorically. She rises while it's still night to bring food for her household, her lamp never goes out, her mouth is full of wisdom, and teachings of lovingkindness are on her tongue, and much, much more. There is a widespread custom of singing Eshet Chayil on Friday nights at home before kiddush, as a song of praise to the woman of the house.

Lately some Jewish feminists have started to feel uncomfortable with the list of mostly domestic qualities enumerated in Eshet Chayil. In religious circles you might describe as an Eshet Chayil a woman of exceptional virtue or stamina: "She gets up at 4am to make stuffed cabbage for 30 for Yomtov, packs her seven kids off to school, sits on umpteen committees and still has time to iron her husband's socks.
