Embedded Systems Glossary: A | Netrino. A/D converter (ay to dee converter) n. A hardware device that reads an analog signal—typically a voltage—compares it to a reference signal, and converts the resulting percentage to a digital value. Short for analog-to-digital converter. Abbreviated ADC. The reference signal represents 100%. An n-bit A/D converter has a maximum value of 2n - 1 and a resolution of Vref/2n. [more] See also D/A converter.

Hdparm -tT /dev/sda Tweaks Much better :-) Devel Basics. Guidelines for Proper Wiring of an RS-485 (TIA/EIA-485-A) Network. Abstract: The proper method of wiring an RS-485 network is described, with recommendations for twisted-pair cabling and correctly locating termination resistors. Received waveforms are shown for examples of proper and improper cable termination. Configurations are shown for a simple, single-transmitter/multiple receiver network through multiple transceiver to multibranched circuits. This application note provides basic guidelines for wiring an RS-485 network. The RS-485 specification (officially called TIA/EIA-485-A) does not specifically explain out how an RS-485 network should be wired.

The specification does, nonetheless, give some guidelines. These guidelines and sound engineering practices are the basis of this note. RS-485 transmits digital information between multiple locations. Wire RS-485 is designed to be a balanced system. Figure 1. The system is called balanced, because the signal on one wire is ideally the exact opposite of the signal on the second wire. Figure 2. Figure 3. Triple Axis Accelerometer Breakout - ADXL335. Control And Embedded Systems .:: Experiment 2 - Expanding Switch Input Detection Previous: Experiment 1 - Basic Switch Input Detection Next: Experiment 3 - The General Purpose Digital Input/Output Module - Part 1 This experiment will use the 8255 Programmable Peripheral Interface (PPI -- see the data sheet: 8255.PDF).

Here, Port A's bits will be called PA0, PA1, PA2, PA3, PA4, PA5, PA6 and PA7. The 8255 can be programmed in mode 0, 1 or 2. In mode 0, Ports A and B operate as inputs or outputs, and Port C is divided into two 4-bit groups, either of which can be operated as inputs or outputs. Mode 1 is the same as Mode 0, but Port C is used for hardware handshaking. In mode 2, Port A is bidirectional (both input and output) and Port C is used for hardware handshaking Port B is not used. The various modes can be set by writing a special value to the control register. This experiment will use mode 0. To outline the procedure: 1. 2. The Ganssle Group. Embedded Software Multimedia. Embedded Systems/Embedded System Basics. Embedded systems programming is not like normal PC programming. In many ways, programming for an embedded system is like programming a PC 15 years ago. The hardware for the system is usually chosen to make the device as cheap as possible.

Spending an extra dollar a unit in order to make things easier to program can cost millions. Hiring a programmer for an extra month is cheap in comparison. This means the programmer must make do with slow processors and low memory, while at the same time battling a need for efficiency not seen in most PC applications. Tools[edit] Embedded development makes up a small fraction of total programming. Debugging tools are another issue. Resources[edit] To save costs, embedded systems frequently have the cheapest processors that can do the job. Memory is also an issue. Other resources programmers expect may not even exist. Real Time Issues[edit] Embedded systems frequently control hardware, and must be able to respond to them in real time.

Low Power System Design Considerations. Temperature sensor for WRT54G 2.x and WRT54GS with DS1820. Introduction This is a tutorial for attaching Dallas DS1820, DS18B20, DS18S20, 1-wire thermometer to Linksys WRT54G/S. The motivation was due to frustration of adapter stacking found on internet. Even some authoritative open source such as OWFS suggest DS2480B line driver, 3.3V -> 5V MAX883 level shifter, voltage regulator and so on.

It can be shown that for simple temperature measurement with WRT54G only sensor and transistor with three resistors is sufficient for the job. No PCB, just soldering on SIL socket. With testing it was found out that DS1820 cannot work with parasite power on 3.3V.
