Why losing a dog can be harder than losing a relative or friend. Recently, my wife and I went through one of the more excruciating experiences of our lives – the euthanasia of our beloved dog, Murphy.

Why losing a dog can be harder than losing a relative or friend

I remember making eye contact with Murphy moments before she took her last breath – she flashed me a look that was an endearing blend of confusion and the reassurance that everyone was ok because we were both by her side. When people who have never had a dog see their dog-owning friends mourn the loss of a pet, they probably think it’s all a bit of an overreaction; after all, it’s “just a dog.” However, those who have loved a dog know the truth: Your own pet is never “just a dog.” Perhaps if people realized just how strong and intense the bond is between people and their dogs, such grief would become more widely accepted. Library campaigners present 'innovative agenda' to rescue struggling sector. Campaigners have requested an urgent meeting with ministers to discuss measures to address the crisis in public-library funding.

Library campaigners present 'innovative agenda' to rescue struggling sector

The appeal follows news that Plymouth is the latest council to propose cuts to its service in order to shore up its overall budget. In a letter seen by the Guardian, campaigners led by former Faber & Faber director Desmond Clarke propose measures to improve efficiency that include merging library authorities, boosting book budgets, introducing a national ebook-lending scheme and updating technology. Clarke, who received an MBE in the New Year honours list for services to the library sector, voiced strong criticism of the Libraries Taskforce, which was set up to find ways to rescue a sector that has been victim to severe budget cuts and closures. The most radical measure proposed in the letter is a reduction in the number of separately managed library authorities in England from 151, a number four times larger than the number of police authorities.

How to Create Awesome Book Displays. I work full time at a public library, and even though I work in the Adult Reference department, I’m fortunate enough to spend most of my work hours on book-related responsibilities. But if I had to pick an area that takes up the majority of my book-related time, it would be creating displays. Now, for some libraries or book stores, creating displays requires nothing more than printing off a sign and slapping a few marginally-related books on a shelf and calling it a day, but that’s what separates the amateur displays from the awesome ones.

Background information. Books on the Rail: the guerrilla library infiltrating Melbourne's Metro. The first book that Ali Berg and Michelle Kalus deliberately left behind on a train was the historical love story The Bronze Horseman by Paullina Simons. “This is Ali and my all-time favourite book,” says Kalus. The pair credit The Bronze Horseman for turning them into “totally obsessed bookworms”. They left a secondhand copy on the train in the hope that someone else would pick it up, read it and be likewise transformed. Thus began Books on the Rail, a Melbourne-based organisation that populates public transport with free books for anyone to pick up and read – a guerrilla library on the move.

Books on the Rail is modelled on the UK project Books on the Underground; Ali met its founder, Hollie Fraser, while working at advertising agency in London last year.
