Interview with Jim Klein, founder of Ubermix. Image by opensource.com How are we going to teach the next generation about open source and Linux? More importantly, how can we get the right technology into classrooms to empower our educators to teach our children the open source way? The opportunities that open source presents to education and academics is growing each day. Opensource.com highlights individual tools like Scratch and TuxPaint that are starting to make an impact—but, what about an entire education distribution? How do we make it easier to get an entire toolset into the hands of school systems, teachers, and students? Enter Ubermix. Ubermix is a Linux distribution built by educators, for educators, and for students, "with an eye towards student and teacher empowerment.

" Takeaway sneak peek: You can make a difference for the next generation. Tell our readers about Ubermix and your target audience. What are some of the open source applications included with Ubermix? What does the future hold for Ubermix? Keynote: Greg Kroah-Hartman (Linux Foundation) - "I Don't Want Your Code" Linus Torvalds: I will not change Linux to “deep-throat Microsoft” The Linux kernel development process may welcome all those who love open source software and have the right coding chops, but one man remains the ultimate authority on what does and doesn't go into Linux—and he isn't afraid to let everyone know it. The rants of Linux creator Linus Torvalds often become public through the Linux Kernel Mailing List archive.

That's the open source way, and it gives us a glimpse into the thinking of the people behind one of the world's most widely used technologies. The latest example comes from an argument between Torvalds and other Linux developers over whether the Linux kernel should include code that makes it easier to boot Linux on Windows PCs. This goes back to Microsoft requiring that PCs designed to run Windows 8 use UEFI firmware with the Secure Boot feature enabled. This has complicated the process of booting Linux on PCs that shipped with Windows 8, but it hasn't prevented people from doing so.

Hi Linus,Can you pull this patchset please?

These little Linux.com video distro tours are not intended to be comprehensive tutorials. They're here to give you an idea of the look and feel of various popular Linux distributions to help you select the one you like best.

We now make all Linux.com videos available in both Flash and Ogg Theora formats. We encourage you to submit your own software tutorial and "tour" videos to Linux.com. The real roadblocks to Linux in education: ZDNet Australia: News: Software. In this issue of Industry Insider, Con Zymaris, our guest columnist from Open Source Industry Australia, describes the major barriers for Linux in the education system. commentary Linux and open source software have a problem in Australia's education sector. And that problem has nothing to do with the value-for-money or fitness--for-purpose of the software. It has everything to do with fighting an uphill battle against entrenched ideology and frightened government bureaucrats. A recent report published by the UK government shows how adopting Linux and other open-source solutions could save education possibly tens of millions of pounds every year.

The UK government's ICT agency, British Educational Communications and Technology Association, suggested that schools could slash their total computer costs by up to 50 percent if they "stopped buying, operating and supporting products from the world's largest software company". But what does this mean in the Australian context? Not likely.
