È sorprendente trovare siti dedicati a qualsiasi argomento, non importa quanto strambo o di nicchia. Ma in questo mare di informazioni è difficile navigare: trovare un sito, una persona, un'email, può diventare letteralmente un'impresa. Non è un caso che Google abbia fatto la sua fortuna "semplicemente" realizzando un motore di ricerca che funzionava meglio dei concorrenti. Tuttavia, le informazioni sono in costante crescita, e i motori di ricerca tradizionali non sono abbastanza intelligenti da capirne il significato e poterle metterle in relazione tra loro. È in questo contesto che nascono i tag e il fenomeno del tagging: gli utenti di internet catalogano personalmente i singoli contenuti, applicando delle etichette (tag, in inglese) a siti, blog, post, video, foto, musiche.
