Workbench Plan - Build a Workbench in One Weekend. Building A Low-Cost Sturdy Work Bench From 2x4's And OSB. Start >> Since the 1990's I've been building workbenches following the design ideas in this article. The concept is simple: Use 2x4's for the legs, and 2x4's or similar lumber for the horizontal structure that supports the plywood or OSB top and shelves. Where the legs intersect the horizontal boards (I call them "stretchers") I always overlap the boards and fasten them securely with four or five 3-inch deck screws or 3-inch nails.

When two boards of decent width are overlapped and joined securely, they form a good tight connection that resists movement (sometimes called "racking") when the workbench is bumped or moved. I say "decent width" because width of these structural members is important. [See Dimensions Of This Workbench] [See Tools Used] [Add your comments below the article] Materials For This Workbench: The materials I used for this project: Four 8' 2x4'sOne partial 2x4, about 6' long. Two large pieces of OSB (Oriented Strand Board).

Project 1: Adjustable height sawhorses 1 of 2 Adjustable sawhorses A pair of dowel pins allows you to raise and lower the top to find a comfortable working height. 2 of 2 Dowel pin assembly A clip and a key ring hold the dowel pin in place. Every shop needs horsepower. Sawhorse details Figure A: Sawhorse Assembly Diagram All parts are labeled and they key to a Cutting List you'll find in the Additional Information below. Project 2: Shop vacuum muffler box 1 of 1 Muffler box in action A carpet-lined box muffles the vacuum noise. Avoiding clouds of sawdust is a must in a small shop, but a dust collector eats up valuable space and money. Build the box from a 4 x 8-ft. sheet of 3/4-in. plywood or MDF (medium-density fiberboard). Vacuum box details Figure B: Shop Vacuum Muffler Build the box from MDF or particleboard.
