December 2012 I'm so glad the world didn't end yesterday, there's so much I still have to achieve. My word for 2012 was complete, although I have to confess that I probably haven't remembered that since about February. I had to scroll back through old blog posts to try and find it! I'm thinking that maybe having one word for a whole year isn't really me. I'm much more of an all-encompassing kind of gal, don't like to restrict myself. December 2012
03/03/13 - 10/03/13 My sculptures integrate ceramic, which is the primary medium, with wood, fresh water pearls, semi-precious stones, gold leaf and oil paint. They are made complete with secret compartments which serve as hiding places for multiple and often times personal meanings. My recent work is based on narratives drawn from personal and historical events that are overlapped with subconscious images. 03/03/13 - 10/03/13

It is difficult to articulate in my blog all my jumbled thoughts and things that are want to come out all at once onto a page. I wouldn't quite call it an epiphany but I was having a rare moment of introspection while doing a batch of ATCs for my Yahoo group swap. It has been a difficult few years for me especially this past year since I had just finished up my graduate degree this summer. I had not had much time at all for art except for a few things for companies and to teach at Create Art Retreat this summer. I hadn't written a piece for an article in quite some time because I had not had time to submit anything worth printing. Challenges were not something I could even consider. Glen Skien has spent the major part of his exhibiting life as a printmaker and author of objects in the Central Queensland coastal city of Mackay. After completing a four year signwriting apprenticeship and a year travelling and working in Europe he returned to study a Diploma of Fine Arts in Townsville, graduating in 1988. Since 1990 he has exhibited consistently throughout regional Queensland with a major survey exhibition “Palimpsest The Art of Glen Skien” touring throughout regional Australia including Icon gallery in Melbourne. In the mid-nineties he worked as a set designer with Crossroad Arts, a Mackay based deaf theatre ensemble. This experience was to be influential with the discovery of how objects and surfaces contain the possibility of revealing their own narratives. Several years later Skien established Silent Parrot Press with a focus on creating limited edition prints and artists’ books. Glen Skien | Contact Glen Skien | Contact

I think seeing the finished product -- whether it's a journal page or painting -- is great and inspiring, I've been obsessed with documenting my process. Earlier this week, I picked up Austin Kleon's new book, Show Your Work. To think it took a book to help me figure out how to show my process seems a little silly, but Kleon's a master at distilling complex ideas into simple chapters that become a roadmap to invigorating creativity. By doing a little, every single day, your work quickly adds up. I draw and write every day in my Red Storybook, and have already filled an entire sketchbook with my quiet truths and vulnerability laid out on the page. Home - .journal girl.
