Rose Petals from Heaven. Arthenice Home Page. December 2012. I'm so glad the world didn't end yesterday, there's so much I still have to achieve. My word for 2012 was complete, although I have to confess that I probably haven't remembered that since about February. I had to scroll back through old blog posts to try and find it! I'm thinking that maybe having one word for a whole year isn't really me. I'm much more of an all-encompassing kind of gal, don't like to restrict myself.
And seriously, what was I thinking? Complete? Part of me is a bit disappointed in myself but the rest takes a more philosophical approach. Is there a word that sums up the opposite of distraction. I really need to go and do something a bit more productive. Poppy painting has nothing to do with this post, I just got distracted looking through my art... 03/03/13 - 10/03/13. My sculptures integrate ceramic, which is the primary medium, with wood, fresh water pearls, semi-precious stones, gold leaf and oil paint. They are made complete with secret compartments which serve as hiding places for multiple and often times personal meanings. My recent work is based on narratives drawn from personal and historical events that are overlapped with subconscious images.
The figures are like actors on a stage, enigmatic yet tense while being enveloped or encrusted within layers of overgrowth concealing a world within. - Richard Cleaver Cleaver, Richard (b. 1952, New Jersey, lives in Baltimore, MD) received a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the Maryland Institute College of Art and a Master of Arts from the University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee and has been carving figures out of clay for over thirty years. Here, Dear Reader, is something to swallow like sacrament, or sparkle in your mouth like magic elixir that cause bursts of longing in your heart. Here, within these reams and schemes of mine, may you find a provocative promise of new sight, or image, or touch from wordy symbols of my need to be skin to skin with other’s obvious meanings. Look, this word, I have pulled it from my gut and offer as sinew to stitch yourself together again; this pen the needle with which to thread beautiful beads to hide those wounded places.
My tongue rolls around new language to teach you of intoxicating sip of poetic liquors I have licked from feasts and famines of a heart that knows how to handle today’s lexicons. Hello my dear friends, this morning the postman brought me something special. It was mail from Lalaland aka England. I had won Liz's giveaway and now my gifts are here!! YAY!! (at last our postal strike is over). I can hardly wait to open this and look at everything! Everything is so pretty and neat - some beautiful lace and rickrack and a very lovely decorated tag! The canvas is so lovely!!! I will have to find a special place for it in my craft room to display it. And last but not least ...
I just wanted to share a few other things that made me smile in the last few days... I have the neatest daisies in my front yard! Such lovely flowers! I have shown you pictures of one of our cats before but I don't think I have ever shown you our "baby". Iris is our second cat and she belongs to my daughter Caylagh. When Iris is tired, she will lay down and cover her eyes with her paw so the light doesn't bother her and once she is fast asleep she looks like this... ... just like a baby kitten!

We've been very busy since attending the retailer trade show at the end of March, and ordering new products! It was long days of attending classes to learn about the new products from all the popular vendors.
Since then, we've spent a lot of time putting together orders. There was so much to see and learn that it's hard not to order everything! About the new "Ink About It on the go! " Although the retail store in Westford is no longer open, our plan is to have regular events at hotels and other venues where you can take classes, do crafts with friends, and purchase products. Our "Retail Store on the go! " is a travelling store that we setup at the venues for all-day events, setup as if it were a full retail location.
May 31st, Save the Date! Our first day-long event is scheduled for May 31, 2014 at the Radisson Hotel in Chelmsford, MA. We've ordered a LOT of new products, and as I mentioned in our plans we'll have our FULL retail store set up at the Radisson as well. Feedback Regards, Joyouslybecoming: A video tutorial; mixed media background technique. I'm pleased to announce that I've accomplished one of my goals for 2011: my first video tutorial ever. I've got a lot of techniques I want to share and an upcoming online class is finally on the horizon in the not too distant future, after I get my manuscript sent off the end of March I'll be ready to work on my first class. But until then, this is for you my readers, a "thankyou" for stopping by, occasionally leaving a foot or fingerprint, i love when you leave comments.
It took me 3 trys at creating the video and this last attempt is far from perfect but I'm confident I will improve with time and practice as with everything else and hopefully, eventually, grow less self conscious in front of the camera. I think I need to do some photo self portraits again to snap myself out of it. I hope you enjoy my little presentation and find it to be a helpful tool for your artmaking toolbox or at least find a bit of inspiration, enough to take you into your studio to play. We also took a brief vacation last week to Orlando and enjoyed some time at Universal Studios.
Some of us rode on scary water rides while the other one (me) took photos. We were hoping to spend a bit more time at the pool, but the weather was not very cooperative. Still was a fun time though. Also wanted to share a cute photo I recently took of The Furry B. Glazed, Distressed Paintings. I was so excited when Kirstin and Jordan of Kojo Designs asked me to be a part of their “the sincerest form of flattery” series!
I love a good challenge so I’ve been keeping my eye out for something on my “wish list” that would be fun to do! I love these prints of glazed paintings from Ballard Designs and decided to make a miniature version of the beach themed one: With a few simple steps (and an eager toddler), I was able to mimic a similar glazed effect to create my own beach painting! I use a paper mache layer underneath the paint so that I can get a peeling-paint-aged-look. My family spent most of the summer at Debordieu beach (near Georgetown, S.C.) when I was growing up. It was so secluded and natural and peaceful…..just like the painting. Once distinct memory is my mother always warning us of large waves by yelling “WHOA NELLY!!!”
Here’s how to make your own! Step 1: I started with a plain gallery wrapped canvas…. The prepared canvas looks like this: Building and building… June 7, 2010. Prepping the Pages of an Altered Book Journal. I recently started an altered book project that will serve as a journal of my recollected childhood memories. I’m going to show you how I prep my pages and I invite you to play along with me by altering a book of your own. If you’ve never altered a book before, I promise you, it’s very easy, and more importantly, incredibly fun. This is the book I’m using. I bought it at the library for 25¢. Check your public library. It’s a great resource for acquiring old, used, hardbound books. When choosing a book to alter, there are a few things I consider. I glue every two pages together to make my pages thicker. After my pages are glued, I’m ready for gesso.
I’m not worried if my pages do break away from the spine. After the gesso dries, I create a simple background for my pages. After coloring the entire page with watercolor crayon, I squeeze some acrylic paint on a palette and spritz it with water to thin out the paint a little bit. This is the finished background page.
