By Ian Woods, in Christchurch and Kat Higgins Rescue efforts have resumed in Christchurch in New Zealand after a powerful earthquake killed at least 75 people and left 300 missing. The city's mayor Bob Parker revealed a rise in the death toll ahead of a televised statement on Wednesday morning local time by the country's prime minister John Key.

Mr Key promised that Christchurch would be rebuilt as would the lives of those affected. He said: "We are a resilient nation, we will not bow down to this challenge. " Mr Key also said police had confirmed that 75 people have now lost their lives since the 6.3 magnitude tremor struck, a rise from the previous figure of 65. New Zealand's government has declared a national state of emergency as it continues to search for those trapped in the rubble. On Tuesday Mr Key described the disaster as possibly "New Zealand's darkest day" as continuing aftershocks hampered rescuers' efforts.
