Is Traditional Media Dead?

We talk a lot about the digital revolution that traditional media is being put through: upheaval, readership and audience shrinkage, bankruptcy, pay walls… What's the situation really like? Traditional media are not dead — not yet, and not for a while at least. They're not all as strong as they've once been, but they still occupy an important place in the media landscape. Let's look at the numbers a bit: 74% of American adults read a newspaper at least once a week, either printed or online. In certain markets, it's 90% ( Scarborough Research ) (thanks @steverubel)

Clifford Stoll: Why Web Won't Be Nirvana - Newsweek.com

After two decades online, I'm perplexed. It's not that I haven't had a gas of a good time on the Internet. I've met great people and even caught a hacker or two. But today, I'm uneasy about this most trendy and oversold community. Visionaries see a future of telecommuting workers, interactive libraries and multimedia classrooms.

A real good laugh. Reminds me of some people in France who told me at the end of the 1990's "The Internet is an American thing, and it is a fad. It will pass. Here we have the Minitel !" Thinking that these "visionaries" still give their opinion on their company's strategy makes me sick ! by jpf Feb 27

Floating Magnetic Table is Repellent | Gadget Lab | Wired.com

http://www.wired.com/gadgetlab/2010/12/floating-magnetic-table-is-repellent/ When I saw the Float I wanted to grab it and start twisting the cubed faces like some kind of gigantic, wooden Rubik’s cube. Sadly, that’s not possible, not least because all the pieces are the same color: wood. The reality of this table, though, is somewhat cooler than Ernő Rubik’s brain-frying puzzle. Inside that box of 64 blocks is an arrangement of magnets and cables. The magnets, embedded in the wooden bricks, repel each other and push the blocks apart.
