How To Buff And Polish - Caswell Inc

Pressed leather handle material, reviving an old technique. I have looked at bayonets from the WW eras and could not help but notice that the black, (what I thought was bakelite at first), handles withstood the test of time often better than their wooden counterparts.

Pressed leather handle material, reviving an old technique.

A bayonet collector I know pointed out to me that it is actually leather compacted under great pressure. We all see the stick tang leather washer handles, I owned one made by Sabatier and had a hard time adjusting the pommel nut to keep up with the shrinkage of the stacked leather washers. What I'm talking about here is different, two or three layers of laminated leather used as full tang scales: I have been looking and researching a lot on knives during the past two years and have not seen a single leather scale handled knife in all this time. I decided to set out and revive the mainly German technique. Leather will withstand impacts better than wood without cracking or chipping.
