Sympathetic string. The musician retunes the sympathetic strings for each mode or raga, so that when the corresponding note (or one an octave below it) is played on the main strings of the instrument, the sympathetic strings (called tarabs in Indian music) will vibrate in response, providing a lingering halo of sound.

Sympathetic string

Detail of a sarangi, showing its sympathetic strings under three playing strings Sympathetic strings are used to enhance the sound of an instrument. Some instruments have only a few sympathetic strings such as the Hardanger fiddle (pictured right). Other instruments which have more include the sitar and sarod with 15 sympathetic strings, and the sarangi which has a total of 37 sympathetics.

The guitar is normally unable to produce effective sympathetic string resonance for tones other than E (resonance from the 6th and 5th strings, tuned to E and A, respectively), B (from the 6th string), D (from the 4th string), and A (from the 5th and 4th strings). Sarod. A sarod The sarod (or sarode) (Bengali: সরোদ) is a lutelike stringed instrument of India, used mainly in Indian classical music.

Sarod

Along with the sitar, it is among the most popular and prominent instruments in Hindustani (northern Indian, Bangladeshi and Pakistani) classical music. The sarod is known for a deep, weighty, introspective sound, in contrast with the sweet, overtone-rich texture of the sitar, with sympathetic strings that give it a resonant, reverberant quality. Stand by Me (song)

King had the beginnings of a melody that he was singing a cappella. I went to the piano and worked up the harmonies, developing a bass pattern that became the signature of the song. Ben and Jerry quickly finished the lyrics ... .[3] The song was not released on an album until it had been out as a single for two years. Neil Degrasse Tyson joins the Wu-Tang Clan! The Tao of Wu. Summer Camp Bridges Hip-Hop and Chess to Teach Life Skills - Union City, CA Patch. The Hip-Hop Chess Federation and Raw Talents’ combined summer camp allows Tri-City to exercise their intellect and muscles with their hip-hop chess, cheer and performing arts programs. The idea of “hip-hop chess” might leave some with a puzzled head scratch. But for veteran hip-hop journalist, certified chess geek and Hip-Hop Chess Federation founder Adisa Banjoko, the marriage of the two seemingly disparate worlds was never a question.

Rappers have always used chess as a metaphor, Banjoko said, be it political, like Public Enemy’s Chuck D on “Rebel Without a Pause” (“No matter what the name, we’re all the same pieces in one big chess game”) or a metaphor for street life, like 50 Cent on “Piggy Bank” (“This is chess not checkers, these are warning shots / After your next move, I’ll give you what I got”). It’s that aspect of both hip-hop and chess — the teaching of life skills — that prompted Banjoko to start the Hip-Hop Chess Federation in 2006.
