La reconstrucción de L'Aquila en 3D con Google SketchUp. (Cross-posted from the SketchUp Blog) On April 6, 2009, a powerful earthquake struck l’Aquila, Italy.
Three hundred and eight people died, and most of the buildings in the city center and surrounding areas were damaged or destroyed. About six months ago, we received an email from a British architect named Barnaby Gunning proposing an ambitious project: to use Google SketchUp to build a digital 3D model of the city, as it is now, in order to stimulate discussion about its reconstruction. New Webinar: Delivering Innovative Mobile Services through Your Library. When I wrote my book Social Software in Libraries five years ago, I decided to include a chapter on mobile technologies.
As I started researching the topic, I was disappointed to find that very few libraries were doing anything to make their services (including their website) accessible via a mobile device. I’d written a paper in grad school on mobile accessibility and I was honestly shocked to find that this didn’t seem to be a major concern for libraries at the time. Flash forward five years and just about every library is thinking about how to make its content and services accessible via smart phones — from their website and catalog, to their licensed content, to instructional services. Libraries, and related institutions, are also developing interesting apps that make their digital collections more accessible and expose people to the rich history where they are standing.
Management, upward mobility and sticking. I was really excited when I saw the title of In the Library With the Lead Pipe’s post “Rising through the Ranks: On Upward Mobility in Librarianship” from last month.
They always provide a comprehensive and thoughtful treatment of the issues they choose to write about. And this is an issue I think about quite a bit. When I finally had time to read it almost two weeks later, I was disappointed to find that a number of the contributors had “a strong aversion to management.” One stated “I don’t feel that I know much about upward mobility, nor that I really want to. Mobile technologies for libraries. Mobile Library. I'm talking to the Ann Arbor Downtown Development Authority's transportation subcommittee this week, and one of the things I have in mind for that discussion is how the bus system gets people to and from the libraries in town - not just the downtown library, but also the various branches around town.
I see the bus and the library as two key parts of a system that has to work together - if you hope to have a kid who doesn't have to be driven around town everywhere and who has some way of planning out their own day to get from place to place, then the combination of bus and library gives them a place to go and a way to get there. What I did with my older son last week might be a good case in point. I picked him up after school, and we walked to the downtown circulator bus (Link Bus) to take it to town.
