The Venice of America The Intracoastal Waterway, that navigable series of rivers, bays, canals and channels that extends along the entire eastern seaboard of the United States, divides the beach areas from downtown Fort Lauderdale. Its Port Everglades harbor basin handles commercial shipping vessels as well as cruise ships and charter fishing boats.

Florida – från Disney till månen. Florida. Symbolen för det konstgjorda USA. Med grädde utan grädde, ost utan ost och muffins med konstgjorda blåbär av färgade sojakulor. Det är kylig gryning i Clearwater Beach. Jetlagad och felvaknad simmar jag längd efter längd i den uppvärmda poolen. På en telefontråd sitter sju papegojor som för att markera att jag inte längre är hemma. Två stora pelikaner glidflyger över mig och landar med oviga dunsar i den lilla havsviken bredvid. På pollare står hägrar, smäckra och strama som högvakter. Torkar mig och går in för att göra frukost åt familjen. När jag var liten trodde jag bestämt att livet skulle bli såhär. Ont om naturliga produkter I dag har Florida i stället kommit att bli symbolen för det usa vi älskar att hata. I affärerna har jag ett sjå att hitta naturliga produkter. När jag var liten var det också från Florida som rymden skulle koloniseras. Familjen har vaknat. Vi går längs havet.
