Introduction: what Plato means by 'care of the soul' in Phaedo 107c (which see for that topic) is not discussed on this page (although for both Plato and Socrates, to 'care for the soul' means to 'become a thoroughly ethical human being'). Socrates' view, as stated in Plato's Apology 40c-41c, is that to think you know what death is -- is to think you know what you do not know, and the same would apply to thinking you know what the soul is in itself. Mr. Freud, Sigmund. Sigmund Freud, the father of psychoanalysis, was a physiologist, medical doctor, psychologist and influential thinker of the early twentieth century.

Working initially in close collaboration with Joseph Breuer, Freud elaborated the theory that the mind is a complex energy-system, the structural investigation of which is the proper province of psychology. He articulated and refined the concepts of the unconscious, infantile sexuality and repression, and he proposed a tripartite account of the mind’s structure—all as part of a radically new conceptual and therapeutic frame of reference for the understanding of human psychological development and the treatment of abnormal mental conditions. Notwithstanding the multiple manifestations of psychoanalysis as it exists today, it can in almost all fundamental respects be traced directly back to Freud’s original work. Table of Contents 1. Baker, Richard M. McFall, and Varda Shoham Volume 9, Number 2 October 2009 Over the past 20 years, the prevalence of mental health disorders has nearly doubled in the United States. For their part, many patients with mental health problems do not even seek help from psychologists; mental health treatment has become so expensive that many patients bypass this route completely, instead seeking out treatment from medical doctors who are covered by their insurance. This major new PSPI report, “Current Status and Future Prospects of Clinical Psychology: Toward a Scientifically Principled Approach to Mental and Behavioral Health Care,” aims to address this state of affairs and achieve for the field of clinical psychology what the Flexner Report accomplished for medicine nearly a century ago.
