Reader Redesign: DIY Kitchen Do-over It’s no surprise that we’re in the mood for a good kitchen makeover these days. Okay, who are we kidding, we’re always in the mood for one. But Erin & Zach’s do-it-yourself remodel of their 1950′s kitchen is especially familiar (and inspiring since we’re just at the beginning of our current kitchen’s transformation). Here’s their letter: We wanted to share the redo of our 1951 kitchen (take note of the sweet before lamp and the heavy-duty ceiling beam disappearing act). We were so lucky to peel up the old laminate floor and the plywood to find original (albeit quite damaged) wood floors that extended into the middle of the kitchen. One of the cool things we did was to buy two pre-made cabinets from Home Depot to create the breakfast bar.

We also re-used all the cabinets but updated the hardware. Thanks so much for checking out our kitchen. We love it too, guys. PS: We’ve announced the winners to this week’s giveaway. My Colortopia - Contact Us. Basement Build - Oakville - Update. Just had some pictures on hand of the build progress. This build has taken longer than anticipated on account of the additions to the scope of work as we progressed. Besides that, I am working alone and I think that I overestimated my own capabilities. However it is progressing well and should be quite the basement when completed. All framed, insulated and vapor barrier installed. Cabling for front, rear and centre speakers were installed along with the HV wiring This is the build out for the Television, Electric Fireplace and Centre Channel speaker. I tried to minimize the impact of the bulkheads in the room. Looking towards the Laundry Room. Drywalled. Looking toward the rear of the basement.

Looking into the Laundry Room. That's Peter, who's done the taping in most of the basements that I've built. And that's Anthony working the Bazooka. Kitchen. Alright, it’s about time we call this turkey DONE. The turkey being the kitchen. Now that we have artwork, lighting, and floating shelves, the last two things on the list of to-do’s are counter stools and a window treatment for over the sink. I’m still wanting to edit the accessories here and there, but that will come together when the two final to-do’s are in place. There haven’t been many changes since we last talked about the kitchen (which was a while ago), except moving the mixer over to the left of the sink, adding the coffee station, and the addition of the red squirrel cookie jar.

I really like having the mixer over in the left corner of the kitchen because it’s out of the way, yet still easily accessible when I want to use it (admittedly, that hasn’t been very often, but I’m hoping to change that in the future). By moving the mixer, we now have room for a “coffee station”. When I saw this cookie jar at Target, I’m pretty sure I let out an audible “Oooo”. 1. 2. 3. HOUSE*TWEAKING. I've had these plans drawn up for quite a while now, and just haven't posted them. Because I thought that they were too simple. Imagine that, too simple. I wondered how the hanging daybed would look. And then a major media company called and asked if I would build this bed and photograph it for them. So I enlisted the hubs help and we started building it one evening. It only took about an hour, without a miter saw (my beloved saw is at the lake, miss ya!) 1. You get the idea. So I kept repeating to myself, never judge a project until it's finished. So we threw it all together, threw Grandma's handmade quilt and threw Aunt Sherry's retro ruffled pillowcases on top, and I tell ya, I was ready to throw myself on too! We fell in love with the hanging daybed.

It looks good, but oh my, it feels amazing. Cool Home: 'Black House' remodel is open, modern - Cindy Steinman - azcentral.com photos. Welcome to my website. Before & After: Restoring a Mid-Century Modern Dresser The Creative Imperative. The Studio Shops At Warner Bros.: The Dream Factory. Previous image Next image There are a lot of things to love about California Home + Design's "Small Space Big Style" Showhouse. But, of all the lovely surprises those 1300 square feet held, none was as exciting to me as stumbling across the answer to two of the decorating questions I'm asked most frequently: Where do I go to get something installed quickly, meticulously and cost-effectively?

And Do you know anyone who can fabricate this elusive piece that I have my heart set on but that doesn't seem to actually exist? Well I'm here to tell you that I have found the holy grail, and it is on the Warner Bros. lot in Burbank, courtesy of their Studio Shops. Their work was all over "Small Space, Big Style" (some examples above, including additional residential projects). And most impressively, they accomplished all of these projects in a tight timeframe of under four weeks, almost a vacation for an outfit that is used to set demands, where everything is needed tomorrow! Before & After: A Bathroom Goes From Pinky Peach to Sleek and Chic. Previous image Next image When Josh, Lauren and their twins moved into their new townhouse in Washington DC's historic Mount Pleasant neighborhood, they knew right away they had to change the bathroom. The retro pink, peach and black tiled bathroom, while quaint and vintage, was not their style. And in a smallish townhouse the room felt too busy and crowded. (Perhaps they also knew that once their daughters got old enough to talk they would fall in love with the bathroom's perky pink: time was of the essence!)

So after a lot of research and a few trips to tile stores and bathroom showrooms up and down the dreaded Rockville Pike, Lauren and Josh presented their contractor with a plan. Details of the renovation: • Wall tile: 3x6" white subway stacked • Floor tile: Lauren can't find the name of the stone right now because it is in their backyard shed blocked by cement slabs being used for another home project. . • Toilet: Toto Aquia Two Dual Flush Elongated (Sources: All photos by Lauren & Josh)

Vintage Revivals: How To Make A Rug. So ya’ll know that sometimes I get these ideas. And these ideas kind of grow until they have a life of their own. And once they grow to that size there is just no stopping them. Such was the case with the rug in my living room. This was my perfect rug. Zebra, Gray, Not to jaggedy, Big stripes, 5×8 and only $600.00 Son-of-a. Good bye perfect rug. So I decided to make my own. Oh and you will see my house progressively get messier as the pics go on…nice. I unrolled the white one face down and drew on the back where I wanted my stripes. The I used a box cutter with a new blade (it has to be sharp…it makes it SOOOO much easier) and cut out my pieces.

Then I laid my “patterns” on the second rug And traced them out. Then using my box cutter I cut them out. Then you start piecing it together. The tape that I used is pressure sensitive seaming tape. I actually found about 1/2 way through that it was easier to tape it from the back so that is what I am going to show you. Then you tape over it.
