Facebook Reveals Major Updates at F8 [LIVE BLOG] 10 Facebook Timeline Designs That Will Blow You Away [PICS] How the new Facebook will impact travel (hint: massively) NB: This is a guest article by Travis Pittman, co-founder and CEO of TourRadar. Watching the livestream of the Facebook F8 event last week, I was curious to see what “BIG” news the young billionaire Mark Zuckerberg was about to announce. Curious on one hand to know how their updates would affect my own business, but also curious to see how Facebook was going to extend its lead over the recently launched Google+ platform.

Facebook promised a lot and, in some ways, delivered on that promise. As with any Facebook update (when you have 800 million users to please), there has been many an opinion already thrown out to the blogosphere and tech world. Opinions ranging from praise for its Apple-like foresight of producing a product that we didn’t know we needed until they built it for us, to more angered opinions at how Facebook is attempting to further infiltrate everything we do by becoming the ultimate online receptacle for our entire lives. I think you get the point. 1. 2.

What about travel? 1. Facebook Begins Auto-Grouping Friends Into Smart Lists. You’ve got 500-something friends, all of about 50 you really interact with. You went to school with Lucy and Henry, you’ve worked with Mike for years, and Joe lives just down the block. Facebook knows all of this — it just doesn’t really go out of its way to show that it knows all of this.

Until now. Sometime recently, Facebook began rolling out “Smart Lists” to select users — which, as the name implies, intelligently groups certain obvious groups of friends into pre-packaged lists. So far, it looks like Facebook is automatically grouping friends into three different bunches: People you work withPeople you attended school withPeople who live within 50 miles of you If nothing else, that last one should be pretty handy for finding a few bar buddies on the quick without bugging your whole friends list (or, if we’re going for more practical stuff here, blasting out the cliche “Oh my God! [Thanks to @NickStarr for shooting the screenshot above our way] Facebook Officially Launches Smart Lists, and Special Friend Lists That Influence the News Feed. Facebook today officially launches several improvements to its Friend Lists feature that can be used to define privacy settings and filter the news feed, including some changes that leaked last week.

As we covered in depth then, users now have automatically created, populated and updated Smart Lists of their family, co-workers, classmates, and local friends. Additionally, users can now add friends to an “Acquaintances” list whose members will appear less frequently in the news feed, and a “Close Friends” list of people who will appear more frequently in news feed and whose updates will trigger notifications. By building or starting these lists for users, Facebook may be able increase adoption of the Friend Lists feature, leading users to control their privacy more nimbly, increase the relevance of their news feeds, and share a wider range of content with more specific audiences.
