Et si Google était ... une plateforme !?

Au-delà de la critique, Steve Yegge insiste sur un aspect qui ferait grandement défaut à Google : une culture « plateforme ». Essayons de fouiller un peu l’argumentation pour nous faire une idée. Google Launches Offline Versions of Gmail, Calendar & Docs. Google is launching a new Gmail web app and updates to Calendar and Docs, in an effort to increase its products' offline utility.

Google Launches Offline Versions of Gmail, Calendar & Docs

Google users have called bringing Gmail, Calendar and Docs offline an essential step for improving productivity, Group Product Manager Rajen Sheth told Mashable. The problem, he explained, is that when users need offline access to their email or calendar, they really need it. To that end, Google is launching a new Chrome app called Gmail Offline. Separate from Gmail itself, the new app is designed for accessing, managing and sending email while you're disconnected from the web.

"We can build on top of a lot of HTML5 standards, which gives us the capabilities to make it work offline," Sheth said. The HTML5 app looks and feels a lot like the Gmail app for tablets. In addition to the Gmail Offline app, Google is rolling out the ability to access Calendar and Docs offline. The apps are only available through the Chrome Web Store at the moment. Google TV Coming to the UK in 6 Months. Google TV, which enables the use of various web services through a set-top box connected to a TV, is set to come to the UK within the next 6 months, according to a report.

Google TV Coming to the UK in 6 Months

The news should officially be announced Friday by Google's Eric Schmidt who is giving a lecture at the Edinburgh Television Festival. Google TV hasn't been very successful so far, according to Logitech's Q4 2011 fiscal year earnings. The company was one of Google's partners for the service, but its sales of Google TV-related products fell short of expectations. Google's expansion of the service to the UK, however, shows that the company is far from giving up on this project. Google TV in the UK will let users search the Internet (voice search will be enabled, too), easily switch between TV and Internet content, use smartphones as remotes and access a special YouTube channel in high definition.

Android’s Dirty Secret: Shipping Numbers Are Strong But Returns Are 30-40% It’s generally accepted that, on the aggregate, Android device sales will far outpace iOS sales year after year.

Android’s Dirty Secret: Shipping Numbers Are Strong But Returns Are 30-40%

However, there’s a dirty little secret about Android devices that most manufacturers are facing: the return rate on some Android devices is between 30 and 40 percent, in comparison to the iPhone 4′s 1.7% return rate as of Antennagate in 2010. As we learned yesterday, Samsung is selling 18 to 21 million phones this quarter. Although all of those won’t be Android phones – Samsung manufactures Bada phones as well for the low-end. We do know for sure that the Galaxy S II sold 3 million in 55 days, a strong showing. However, on the ground, many return rates are approaching 40% said a person familiar with handset sales for multiple manufacturers.

Google flight search launched. Google has introduced a nifty flight information search function that makes vacation planning a tad easier.

Google flight search launched

The function allows those with a particular destination in mind to find out which airlines serve that route, and when they fly. Those who are looking to fly from Hong Kong to Thailand, for example, can search for “flights from HKG to BKK.” The search will then return with a list of non-stop flights, including when the flights take off and land, what airlines offer them, and what days of the week the flights operate. Flight fares are not part of the new feature, so sites like Expedia will still be the main hub for travelers looking to book tickets. But this is a useful tool to see quickly and easily if any airline offers direct flights between your chosen cities, and with Google’s announcement that they acquired ITA last month, it probably won’t be a long before they list prices too.

The search function only gives routes connected by direct flights.

Launched in early December 2010 in the US, the Web Store will now be available in many local markets. The Chrome Web Store has been quite successful, Google says, 17 million applications have been installed in the first three months. The Web Store has been available around the world, but only in English. But Google has even bigger plans, it will eventually make the Web Store available to other browsers, though the company isn't providing too many details for this. Along with making it available in 41 languages, the Chrome Web Store is also getting support for in-app payments. Six Reasons Why Chromebooks Are a Bad Idea. Music Beta : les labels furieux.
