Meaningful, Engaged Learning. In recent years, researchers have formed a strong consensus on the importance of engaged learning in schools and classrooms.

Meaningful, Engaged Learning

This consensus, together with a recognition of the changing needs of the 21st century, has stimulated the development of specific indicators of engaged learning. Jones, Valdez, Nowakowski, and Rasmussen (1994) developed the indicators described below. These indicators of engaged learning can act as a "compass" for reform instruction, helping educators chart an instructional course and maintain an orientation based on a vision of engaged learning and what it looks like in the classroom and community. 1. Indicator: Vision of Engaged Learning What does engaged learning look like? 2. In order to have engaged learning, tasks need to be challenging, authentic, and multidisciplinary. 3. 4. The most powerful models of instruction are interactive. 5. For engaged learning to happen, the classroom must be conceived of as a knowledge-building learning community. 6. 7. 8. These were successes and I am proud of them. But even “failures”--and there have been many--can be a spur to make learning better. But we often must take a risk and avoid pat formulas, the safe path, over-reliance on texts. There is no textbook on life and learning that I know about, so lessons, too, should not be textbook bound, though they can be textbook-based. For me, all textbooks are just one more resource to use. I was asked to do a long-term substitution at the local high school in the (English as a Second Language) program. The students were segregated with me from the rest of the school in the mornings: –. I manfully tried for about a week to use the textbook, but I couldn’t. Student Jeff Lamble to present landfill research Aug. 24 during annual Academic Convocation. One year ago, NIU student Jeffrey Lamble found himself exploring the lives of open landfill scavengers in Central America. An estimated 4,000 “waste pickers” in Guatemala City turn small profits by rifling through the 40 acres of trash for reusable items that they can pocket and sometimes sell. This includes food. Unfortunately, their labors expose them to environmental health hazards with adverse effects. Emissions of carbon dioxide and methane gases harm their lungs. Neighbors within close proximity of the landfill who aren’t actively digging through the its waste – a number near 26,000 – are vulnerable to the air pollution and the high concentrations of lead and other poisons that seep into the municipal water system. Lamble, who will present his research Friday, Aug. 24, during the annual Academic Convocation, first glimpsed this world in 2010. This vision, as articulated in President Hodge's inaugural address and his 2008 Annual Address (PDF file), raises new expectations for the teaching and learning process.
