I hope you enjoy Night School! Why Atheism Will Replace Religion. Atheists are heavily concentrated in economically developed countries, particularly the social democracies of Europe (Barber, 2012). In underdeveloped countries, there are virtually no atheists . Atheism is thus a peculiarly modern phenomenon. Why do modern conditions produce atheism? First, as to the distribution of atheism in the world, a clear pattern can be discerned.

In sub-Saharan Africa there is almost no atheism (Zuckerman, 2007). Belief in God declines in more developed countries and is concentrated in Europe in countries such as Sweden (64% nonbelievers), Denmark (48%), France (44%) and Germany (42%). The question of why economically developed countries turn to atheism has been batted around by anthropologists for about eighty years. Atheists are more likely to be college-educated people who live in cities and they are highly concentrated in the social democracies of Europe. Even the psychological functions of religion face stiff competition today. References. The Top 10 Psychology Studies of 2010. The end of 2010 fast approaches, and I'm thrilled to have been asked by the editors of Psychology Today to write about the Top 10 psychology studies of the year.

I've focused on studies that I personally feel stand out, not only as examples of great science, but even more importantly, as examples of how the science of psychology can improve our lives. Each study has a clear "take home" message, offering the reader an insight or a simple strategy they can use to reach their goals , strengthen their relationships, make better decisions, or become happier. If you extract the wisdom from these ten studies and apply them in your own life, 2011 just might be a very good year. 1) How to Break Bad Habits If you are trying to stop smoking , swearing, or chewing your nails, you have probably tried the strategy of distracting yourself - taking your mind off whatever it is you are trying not to do - to break the habit. I’ve decided to start a series called 100 Things You Should Know about People.

As in: 100 things you should know if you are going to design an effective and persuasive website, web application or software application. Or maybe just 100 things that everyone should know about humans! The order that I’ll present these 100 things is going to be pretty random. So the fact that this first one is first doesn’t mean that’s it’s the most important.. just that it came to mind first.

Dr. All about placebos | Yes, I Can! by Robin Nixon. Placebos are very strange things; inactive substances that make us feel better (or worse) simply because we think that they will. This video explains just how bizarre it all is, and shows just how powerful the human mind is. I think you’ll find it fascinating. In medical research, placebos are given as control treatments and depend on the use of measured deception.

Common placebos include inert tablets and procedures based on false information. For a modern drug to be given the go-ahead by bodies such as the Food and Drug Administration in America, it must be shown to be significantly superior in effect to a placebo. And given that placebos generally have a 30% effect (or work 30% of the time), that’s a high hurdle over which to leap. Incredibly, though, it has been found that even when someone knows they are taking a placebo it can still have the same 30% effect. Join our email list: Stay up to date with the latest headlines via email. Our society is obsessed with productivity and efficiency, and we despise procrastination. The early Americans imported the Earl of Chesterfield’s admonition: “No idleness, no laziness, no procrastination: never put off till tomorrow what you can do today.” And then, beginning in the 1970s, the do-it-now anti-procrastination industry burst onto the scene.

Over time we began to feel terribly guilty about procrastinating, yet we did it even more. But it wasn’t always so. Many iconic figures have been inveterate procrastinators, from St. When the Wall Street Journal recently reported on some “fans of procrastination,” several psychologists who research procrastination shot back.

Academics who study procrastination fall into camps with about as much in common as the tribes of Afghanistan.
