Statistics vs Data Science vs BI. As someone who trained as a statistician, I've always struggled with that title.

I love the rigor and insight that Statistics brings to data analysis, but let's face it: Statistics — the name — has always had a bit of a branding problem. Telling someone I was a statistician was more likely to conjure up images of me counting runs at a baseball (or cricket) game than pursuing serious science. And the image of what Statistics ideally is about — collaborative, interactive, applied, fun — was too often subsumed by the stereotype image — isolated, actuarial, ivory tower, report driven. (And hey, even actuaries can be fun sometimes.) That's why I'm a fan of the term "data scientist" — it embodies everything that Statistics always should be, without the baggage and tradition of the term "statistician". Un tel travail permet de poser les bases de ce à quoi un projet Big Data peut répondre, de manière concrète. Faut-il passer d’une feuille de calcul à un outil de visualisation plus performant ? Faut-il analyser de gros volumes de données ? Les données sont elles structurées ou non structurées ? Les projets BI qui étaient jusqu’alors l’apanage de la Direction Générale et de la DSI et surtout réservés au reporting financier gagnent les directions métiers.

En effet, la tension économique actuelle rend nécessaire une meilleure compréhension des marchés et des comportements clients. Chaque acteur de l’entreprise doit par ailleurs disposer de KPi’s pertinents pour suivre son activité, fixer ses objectifs et manager ses équipes. Mais, malgré une certaine démocratisation des outils et des pratiques et tous les efforts déployés, les données, véritable richesse de l’entreprise, restent sous exploitées – et l’émergence du big data renforce ce sentiment.
