Battle of Carlow. The Battle of Carlow took place in Carlow town, Ireland on 25 May 1798 when Carlow rebels rose in support of the 1798 rebellion which had begun the day before in County Kildare. The United Irish organisation in Carlow led by a young brogue-maker named Mick Heydon who had taken over the leadership following the arrest of the previous leader, Peter Ivers, who was arrested with several other leading United Irishmen at Oliver Bond's house in March of that year, had assembled on the night of the 24th and set off at dawn to attack the county town. Picking up more volunteers along the way, their numbers swelled to around 1,200 they marched completely unopposed.

An attack on the town would take place simultaneously from four different directions, through the four main streets. 1. 2. 3. 4. All would converge on Potato Market. As the various contingents advanced, they did not know that Colonel Mahon of the Ninth Dragoons had the military in the barracks and the town on the highest alert. The Battle of Carlow.

The town of Carlow was the location for a planned attack by the Rebel forces on those of the British crown in May 1798. Early in the morning of the 25th of May the Carlow rebels assembled in great numbers. They had come from various parts of the county - from Grange and Hacketstown, from Tullow and Leighlin and from other areas too. A further contingent from the Queen's County (Laois) planned to meet with them at Graigue Bridge. When the Rebels entered the town of Carlow they were joined not only by the Catholic inhabitants but also by people who had secretly arrived there during the previous day and night. A crowd of approximately two hundred people marched through Tullow Street but when they reached Potato Market their fortunes changed. There the Rebels progress was impeded and they came under fire from two sentinels.

The Rebels had to abandon their plan to meet with the Queen's County Rebels at Graigue Bridge. 1798 in Carlow. The eighteenth century was a period of great political and social upheaval in Europe. In Ireland, the people had suffered under the ravages of Cromwell and the Penal Laws. They were also subject to the Tithe System through which a tax was paid to the Established Church of Ireland for the support of its clergy.

Resentment was growing to the tithes and this resulted in agrarian violence and unrest. The French Revolution of 1789 inspired ideals of rebellion and liberty in young Irish people. The United Irishmen founded in 1791 by Theobald Wolfe Tone and other young radicals promoted and upheld these revolutionary ideals. The Battle of Carlow was but a short offensive which resulted in a massacre of hundreds of local rebels on the 25th of May 1798. Carlow 1798.
