LEED Buildings Rated Green ... and Often Toxic. A new study from a health-research nonprofit blasts LEED for failing to protect against toxic indoor environments.

The city didn't get its first green high rise until 2006, with the completion of the Hearst Tower. Designed by Inhabitat favorite Norman Foster, the striking blue lattice tower has become one of the most recognizable buildings in the city. The green building earned a LEED Gold certification in 2006, making it the first skyscraper in New York to achieve the coveted green building seal. We've long been fans of this thoughtful, interesting building at Inhabitat, so we were thrilled when we were recently invited to take a private tour inside the Hearst Tower -- read on for the details and our exclusive pictures from inside the stunning green high-rise.

With the design of the Hearst Tower, Foster creates a fun and intriguing interplay between modern architecture and a historical building. Munich's 'NuOffice' Snags Highest LEED Rating Ever Issued. Outside of our homes, most of us probably spend the vast majority of our lives at work.

Occupant Empowerment: Creating a Culture of Sustainability with LEED

Green Building Council I hear people say it all the time: “Buildings don’t use energy, people do.” So then I ask myself: Why has the idea of engaging with building occupants fallen by the wayside?... Despite the fact that it’s one of the most cost-effective ways to minimize energy consumption and save money? I wish I could provide a simple answer to that question, but the reality is that influencing occupants to modify their behavior to meet the sustainability goals of a building and/or an organization is far from straightforward.

To address the impact occupants have on resource consumption in the built environment, USGBC recently released Pilot Credit 59: Occupant Engagement. Pilot Credit 59: Occupant Engagement requires two main components:
